  1. Buying at $5.40 vs $5 makes me feel a bit foolish, but if I am right and many here, this $0.40 will look trivial in not that long. And that's the perspective you need to have. You are buying it less than 40% of tangible book, let alone book. If it gets anywhere near tangible book, then you've made a 150% gain. I suspect it should trade at tangible book sometime next year. Cheers!
  2. Looking real good! Cheers! http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-12-22/north-american-rail-freight-carloads-for-dec-17-table-.html?cmpid=yhoo
  3. Well you also bought Fairfax below $100, so it could go either way! ;D Cheers!
  4. Hi Plan, Not crying victory. Just noting that borrowing is increasing, and deposits aren't stagnating. Confidence is a big part of the game, and if corporations and consumers start to become confident, they will borrow and banks will lend. Cheers!
  5. Article on how corporations are borrowing again. Cheers! http://www.cnbc.com/id/45740898

  8. Here is an article from yesterday's Globe & Mail, with some background information on the Fibrek/Resolute bid, as well as comments Prem gave to the interviewer yesterday. Cheers! http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-investor/investment-ideas/streetwise/hostile-takeover-bid-puts-fibrek-on-the-defensive/article2277573/
  9. Terrific, little interview I read on the weekend in The Seattle Times with Costco CEO Jim Sinegal...one of the great retailers in U.S. corporate history. Cheers! http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2017040471_sinegal18.html
  10. Record numbers this holiday season. Cheers! http://money.msn.com/business-news/article.aspx?feed=AP&data-ipsquote-timestamp=20111220&id=14638279
  11. Article on philanthropist Charles Feeney. I just liked the last line of the article. Cheers! http://finance.yahoo.com/news/meet-charles-feeney-cornells-350-million-donor-161507712.html
  12. He could easily take out much smaller targets, yet he chases after something more than twice his size, and not in any sort of vulnerable position. It was a significant miscalculation, and anyone could have told him that it was probably not worth the cost and effort. Cheers!
  13. Might be a good thing James. The new owners know that this thing is a cash cow, and that cash flows redirected elsewhere is probably a better bet. We were waiting for it to go below $5 last week...should have bought more instead of waiting! ;D Cheers!
  14. We should have bought more when it went down last week. I was hoping it would fall below $5! That's what happens when you keep waiting for an even fatter pitch sometimes. Cheers!
  15. I thought for the next week, if you see anything that gets you into the spirit of the season...in particular people helping people...feel free to post it on this thread. This one caught my eye, and I thought people might like to read it. http://news.yahoo.com/anonymous-donors-pay-off-kmart-layaway-accounts-221000605.html Also, if there is anything you do within your household or work, please feel free to share. We do a toy drive for the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau, and a food drive for the Vancouver Food Bank. My family and I also donate to a couple of charities during the season. We all spend plenty of time during the rest of the year trying to make money on this message board, so I thought we could also discuss any ways we give back to the community or world around us, or even give ideas to those that want to contribute but may not exactly know how. Cheers!
  16. That employment position that was advertised recently at Berkshire headquarters is apparently for an assistant to Todd Combs. Cheers! http://www.omaha.com/article/20111211/MONEY/712119932
  17. Short article on Leucadia. Cheers! http://www.investorplace.com/2011/12/leucadia-national-corp-berkshire-hathaway-warren-buffett/
  18. For those not familiar. Cheers! http://eatocracy.cnn.com/2011/12/15/how-coca-cola-helped-shape-the-modern-day-santa/?hpt=hp_bn8
  19. IMF managing director Christine Lagarde, who has been about the only European leader actually trying to move things forward over there, says that things are escalating and nations need to work together. Deaf ears Christine...deaf ears! http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-12-15/imf-s-lagarde-says-escalating-european-crisis-requires-more-cooperation.html Frankly, other than coordinated monetary and fiscal policy, I don't think the U.S. should help. No one over there wanted to help during 2008, and I remember some very, very harsh words for the U.S. by European leaders. Now they don't want to work together to solve a problem that they easily could if the will and compromise was there. Suck it up Europe! ;D Cheers!
  20. North American Freight Railroad Carloads ending December 10th...still looking good! http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-12-15/north-american-rail-freight-carloads-for-dec-10-table-.html?cmpid=yhoo Philly Fed Manufacturing Index...much higher than expected. http://www.cnbc.com/id/45682857 Jobless Claims Drop & New York Factory Orders Pickup: http://www.cnbc.com/id/45681589 As Buffett said, housing is what is weighing down the economy, and it will take time to pickup. Otherwise, the U.S. economy is slowly warming up. Cheers!
  21. BAC continues to make great progress in reducing writeoffs and delinquencies in its credit card business. Cheers! http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Bank-America-card-defaults-apf-589958558.html?x=0
  22. Bloomberg has assembled the first ever Berkshire Hathaway Christmas Catalog. Cheers! http://www.bloomberg.com/money-gallery/2011-12-13/a-very-buffett-christmas.html
  23. I can't believe the two lawyers argued about that...paid over $1,000 hour and they both acted like children. Cheers!
  24. I second that. I would never invest in a company where management seemed to have forgotten its role or who the real owners are. Well, he's the owner isn't he? That's why the company is named after him! ;D To hell with all those little dweebs called small shareholders. Compare that to someone like Prem, who reads this board to see what his smaller shareholders are thinking, and then provide them information they may deem pertinent in future releases. Managers/associates flee Biglari Holdings in good times, while Prem retains managers during the worst times any company could face...who do you think is the better leader and espouses Buffett's philosophy? Cheers!
  25. Reuters was able to petition the court to release Steven Cohen's deposition testimony, and here are some of the comments. My personal opinion, not unlike what Buffett always says, if you are close to the line, then you probably should think twice. David Sokol should have thought twice, and it sounds like Cohen also needs to think twice before acting on a trade. Cheers! http://tinyurl.com/6shxzwb
