If we never heard of the common flu and it suddenly came on the scene society would be reacting the same. The flu vaccine is only 50-60% effective for healthy individuals 18-64. So even if we get an effective vaccine for C-19 it's probably not going to be much better than that. Unpopular opinion: And I don't want to make light of individuals deaths or sickness as it's a serious thing. But the sooner this thing hits countries like the US the quicker we understand the real numbers and the real risks.

Are you worried about their reliance on South and Central America flights? It looks like about 1/3rd of their flight volume. Coronavirus could impact those countries for quite some time. This could also disproportionately affect their rev which is one of the highest ancillary revenues in the industry 45+ percent if I remember correctly. I imagine the South and Central American flights are the longest. Take these out of the equation and you're looking shorter flights which translates to less bags and fewer drinks purchased.

Honestly I think you guys are overreacting. There isn’t a President past, present, nor future who wouldn’t have some type of media control. Out of fairness I agree that Pence (and Trump) probably are not the best to handle this situation. But who is? You’re dealing with the unknown and I trust Pence to punt to individuals who know what they’re doing. Donny isn’t going to take this back under his wing (until it’s almost solved and he’s looking for credit) :P Also you’re being a bit dishonest with what Pence said regarding tobacco. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/mike-pence-smoking/ Back to the corona virus....I think the key metric everyone wants to know is mortality rate...my guess is that’s driving the majority of the fear. Especially when you hear and see videos of “people being burned alive.” The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle. Worse than what China reported, but I’m personally doubtful of the bubonic plague hysteria. If it turns out to be as bad as some say, well I’ll be at the family cabin The Snopes article says this: Although Pence did state that “smoking doesn’t kill,” he buttressed his argument by saying that only a third of smokers died of smoking-related illnesses Similarly, using the same reasoning, it could be said that Coronavirus doesn't kill because most people survive it. And handguns don't kill because 80% of people shot by handguns survive. Anyways, Pence was appointed seemingly at the same time as Trump was contradicting the CDC on coronavirus. So it's a bad omen IMO that an official filter has been put into place (The White House). It appears to be a direct response to what the CDC said. https://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/watch/trump-gives-incoherent-briefing-on-coronavirus-contradicts-cdc-79522373801 Yes and it goes on to say Pence was using accurate statistics for the time. It also says that the article was not primarily for the discussion of whether smoking is or isn’t dangerous. Rather it was for the legality and the preservation of the freedom to choose to smoke. All I’m saying regarding Pence and Trump is give it a week or so. They haven’t even done anything yet but apparently they are doing it wrong....putting the cart before the horse. Regardless it looks like the market was wanting an excuse for a sell off. LC, Spek, and Greg hit the nail on the head in this an other threads.

The CEO of a company isn't in the R&D lab or on the factory floor or doing sales call or doing building maintenance (most of the time) either, but do you think it doesn't matter who the one making the decisions, picking the team and allocating resources is? Behind the scenes Expert: "We have been seeing success with this testing. Statistics show that this is the best course of action and we need resources." Trump: "Name your price." Press Conference Trump: "I with my great intellect have decided to allocate this specific amount of funds to this expert for the study I found most compelling. I believe they are the best for the job. We have the best here in America. The vaccine is going to be hugeee." Also Trump is about the biggest germaphobe the world has ever seen. I'm surprised he isn't walking around like bubble boy yet. :P

Trump doesn't need Pence for that. He has the best knowledge of science. Trump University > MIT ;D
-
Why is everyone on here acting like Pence and Trump are in the lab trying to synthesize the vaccine on their own ;D

Sold 20% of my SPCE puts locking in 67% gain.

It's certainly not out of the realm of possibility. I mean a brief look at China's past will show many sick things done to their own populations. But conspiracy theories are often a bunch of conjecture and convenient motives, outcomes, and boogiemen being strung together. But I will say this......those Hong Kong protests have basically halted.

I believe someone pointed it out earlier in the thread. But Taiwan and China are pretty bitter enemies. It’s hard to find news coming from Taiwan about China credible. At the very least there is some motive to spread false info.

So a guy plays a game on his cellphone while driving and we have to come up with ways to blame the car manufacturer? We may never have self driving vehicles if people respond in this way to these events (anyone who is short will love it though). Autopilot advises you must keep your hands on the steering. So do non-autopilot car manufacturers. Same with if you have lane assist and cruise control on. And no, autopilot does not mean the car drives itself without supervision. Just like you wouldn't want to walk into the cockpit of your commercial airline flight and see the pilots playing video games while the plane was on "autopilot". The term is not ambiguous. Yes, anecdotes are the #1 best form of research in this thread. Look back on all the bear arguments in this thread for many more anecdotes over the years. No one really picked up on the story about the Taycan fire, but Tesla anecdotes = click/retweet crack so they get amplified. Do you get this hard for your significant other? Or is Elon the only one that does it for you.....? Honda civics 2015 models had a camera for the passenger side mirror which was used to check blind spots. They discontinued it because they found it caused too many distractions and caused drivers to not actually turn and look themselves. I find it ironic that you tout the magic of autonomous vehicles due to their ability or future ability to mitigate human error. Yet when that same function “encourages” a human error it’s insignificant. I don’t think it’s out of the question to discuss the relationship and potential impact of autonomous systems might have on human decision making. What is your track record of all the posts you've made on this name? Not impressive. Maybe you could devote the failed opportunity costs to actually acquiring a significant other. Autopilot is not an autonomous vehicle just like a 747 with autopilot is not an autonomous airplane. It does not "encourage" the pilot to fall asleep. An argument can be made that cruise control "encourages" human error. So do cell phones, but we are not willing to give them up. Doesn't mean AAPL is to be held accountable if a teen is texting while driving. But I guess in your world, accountability doesn't matter. Yes, the guy who launched a rocket company and successful EV company simultaneous is unimpressive. The difference is I don’t claim to be a stock savant. And I’m not running down individuals who have taken time to approach Tesla’s thesis from different angles. Apparently you have it all figured out.... ::)

And if you are in the truckers rear blind spot then you are blind as well. You can't see what happens in front of the truck and you won't know if he is about to slam on his breaks until after he does so, add in your reaction time and a crash is hard to avoid. More reasons why we need self-driving trucks with 360-degree cameras, ultrasonics, radars, and V2V coms. At the very least driver assist technology. Making turns with a 53 foot trailer and having to make adjustments (possibly stop and reverse) mid turn due to other vehicles, pedestrians, signs, etc seems way too difficult.
-
As someone who has a Class A CDL and about 3k miles in road time (not really lot) stay the hell away from semis. Keeping a 8.5ft wide truck in an 9-12ft wide lane is difficult enough on a perfect day. Throw in some crosswinds, inclement weather and it's a whole different ball game. Especially in construction zones. I see so many morons driving right next to them on lane merges with barriers on either side. And remember if your riding their ass they can't see you. Rear blind spot is something like 30-50ft depending on trailer.

Thanks for all the perspectives you guys took the time to share. It's definitely given me some good aspects to think through.

Welcome to the forum They could also be after the active user base. Fitbit has 28m and change active users where Apple watch has 55m.

This guy has some good in-depth videos on Tesla with cold weather. Extreme cold definitely has so adverse affects on charging etc. ICE cars are not immune to this either. I know a lady who is a nurse in Barrow Alaska (northernmost town). She says that it gets so cold that they have to drain the oil from their vehicles while the engine is warm and keep it in the house so that it doesn’t congeal. Again an extreme example, but point being any mechanical equipment or tech will have issues in extreme situations. The question is can Tesla handle the majority of situations? It seems pretty clear that they can.

Bought some speculative calls on SPCE when it dipped this morning. Just sold out at +300%....paid off my vacation.
