  1. Or they're just juggling things around because the HQ2 process gave them a ton of good data on other places where it might be better to grow rather than Seattle.

  4. Yeah, and really old cars could get 5-10 MPG too, but it doesn't make it "impossible" for modern cars to get 30 MPG. We're talking about new technology and building more to clean up the grid for the future. You said: "70-80% efficiency is impossible IMO", so looks like you were wrong.
  5. If you watch the video and check the slide I posted, they claim 91% round-trip efficiency on this gravity system. For pumped-hydro: "The round-trip energy efficiency of [pumped-hydro storage] varies between 70%–80%, with some sources claiming up to 87%". This exists and can be measured, so no need for fuzzy napkin math based on the average efficiency of very different motors and pumps. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pumped-storage_hydroelectricity https://web.archive.org/web/20180716054047/https://www.colorado.edu/engineering/energystorage/files/MSThesis_JGLevine_final.pdf https://books.google.co.uk/books?hl=en&lr=&id=TPReBwAAQBAJ&oi=fnd&pg=PA25&dq=info:1fSw0yVikpMJ:scholar.google.com&ots=nOV5mvjb3R&sig=-mVET6C_qQosE11doraPLlwi0e0&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q&f=false https://www.economist.com/technology-quarterly/2012/03/03/packing-some-power?frsc=dg%7Ca

  8. Good question. I assume it's the all-in cost, kind of like how they give a cent/kWh cost for solar even though sunlight's free and many panels require little maintenance, so most of the cost is the upfront capex and labor to build it/install it.

  12. "Giaever's share of the prize was specifically for his "experimental discoveries regarding tunnelling phenomena in superconductors"" So not a climate scientist. Noted. "Giaever is currently a science advisor with American conservative and libertarian think tank, The Heartland Institute." Ok. "Heartland has long questioned the links between tobacco smoking, secondhand smoke, and lung cancer and the social costs imposed by smokers" Note exactly the most scientifically-minded think tank either... "The Institute no longer discloses its funding sources, stating that it had ended its practice of donor transparency after experiencing the organized harassment of its donors" Translation: Got caught producing propaganda for donors. "Oil and gas companies have contributed to the Institute... ExxonMobil..." "The Institute has also received funding and support from tobacco companies Philip Morris,[4]:234 Altria and Reynolds American"

  14. Thanks for posting the URL. Not aware of any way to invest in the idea, but it's a cool technology that, if it delivers, could be really useful to have on the grid.
  15. I'm sure it's CAD. The stock officially trades on the TSX in CAD. He's talked down the price of the stock many times in the past. You just have to keep in mind that he's the most conservative person in the world financially, though.

  21. The price certainly doesn't seem low, but Culp knows exactly how DHR thinks about acquisitions and what they can do, so if it turns out that the business was under-earning and there was a ton of obvious fat to cut and DHR makes a killing on it, it'll certainly leave a bad feeling to GE shareholders because of the appearance of conflict, even if Culp did his best and didn't consciously give DHR preferential treatment just because they're his old buddies and he owns a ton of stock.
  22. Does it feel weird to anyone else that Culp is selling a huge asset to his old company? Does Culp still own all his DHR shares? Seems like a conflict...
  23. He's mentioned in the past that too high stock price has implications for employee retention. Clearly his way of trying to keep itk in a range where he thinks that won't be a problem. But if Mr. super-conservative thinks the stock is a good buy for employees at this price, fair value is above... I don't know if the market will realize that, though. Not the first time this has been done, example from 2007:
