  1. I've been checking every day too.. Have they said when they would publish it?
  2. That's a good question. I've already shared my thoughts about it earlier, though I don't remember in which thread.
  3. https://secure.getclicky.com/user/login?back=%2Fuser%2F#/marketshare/global/search-engines/ Stats compiled from 300k+ different websites getting an aggregate 300+ million page views every day. Breaks down both mobile and desktop searches.
  4. Intuitively, rail shipments seem like the best single measure to me too. Raw materials, a large fraction of imported goods (from ports), coal (proxy for energy), and lots of finished good move around by rail. If rail shipments are up a good amount yet the economy is supposedly slowing down, it seems like something else in the real economy should be down a lot to more than compensate.
  5. Yeah, margin calls make sense. A smaller version of this seems to have happened last month.
  6. No, just wondering if there's an obvious explanation that I'm missing :)
  7. Not much. But when it spikes up, I hear all about how gold is a refuge and a store of value and all that. But when it spikes down, I usually don't hear much.
  8. I was looking at the price of gold just for fun, and it has been falling quite a bit in recent days. Isn't it supposed to go up when there's panic and uncertainty and all that (according to the gold bugs)? Am I missing something?
  9. Anyone on the board sold HPQ because of recent developments? Just curious...
  10. Personally, I don't even consider FBK and FTP to be in the same business, and I don't really see what they have in common other than trees, but I guess there's more than one way to look at it ;)
  11. Have you read this whole thread and what's linked from it? That would be a good starting point, and should point you to many external sources. After that if you have specific questions I'll do my best to help. Or if you just want the very quickest overview, check out the writeup on the VIC, it's pretty good.
  12. Same as Parsad, except I don't run a fund, and I don't have much cash left... :'( But my consolation is that the businesses I own are probably doing crazy buybacks and/or allocating capital in other businesses as we speak, so it should turn out well in the long-term.
  13. Days like this remind me of the recent interview with one of the altius guy, where he said "bring on the bloodbath", because they wanted to spend some of their cash. Looks like they're getting their wish.
  14. Some people seem to be unaware of this, because the stock had a nice pop today.
  15. Looks like you got your wish, Myth. Down to 30 right now.
  16. This one's also hitting 52 week lows.
  17. Hitting 52 week lows, basically fallen off a cliff (pun intended). PE around 5. Unless you believe iron ore is dead for a long time, this could be a great bargain. Company doesn't have too much debt, nice margins. I haven't dug super deep into them, and I don't own any, but they're on my watchlist.
  18. SETI's the grandpa, but there are now a ton. Many in the life science, astronomy, mathematics, etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_distributed_computing_projects
  19. FTP on BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-14989019 Video shows Landqart. Very cool, very high tech. The last part shows how Chad operates: So after buying an asset at a deep value price, he went from lots of commodity products to one high-margin niche product with a moat, and from 1,000 tons/year to 10,000 tons/year capacity, all of that more efficiently because of fewer workers and better machinery. I'd say he's pulling the right levers :)
  20. I live somewhere where we have tons of very cheap hydro power, so we have electric heating. I figure I might as well have that electricity do something useful for humankind before it heats the place :) It would be even better if I had a dozen old PCs that I could use to heat the whole place from one end to the other during the cold months.. Comfort from science, literally!
  21. Lovely frickin' ending to day. Wonder if it's the start of a new mini-panic..
  22. I second that. People who are generous with their ideas - like many of the people on this forum - usually get more in return than what they give away anyways, so it makes a lot of sense.
  23. http://allthingsd.com/20110921/apple-to-hold-special-event-on-october-4/ iPhone 5 on October 4th, most likely. I'd love iPad 3 too, but that's a lot less likely...
