Bagehot
Any Diary Farmers on the board? Anyone knows any diary farmers with herds that exceed 500? I continuously water and feed my diary herd, yet they never produce any offspring or even increase in size. I now think the guy that sold me the herd may have been less than forthcoming in the negotiation. Looking forward to some knowledgeable responses in this thread! oddballstocks
Good friend's dad is a dairy farmer, although scaling back as he ages. My mother-in-law's husband grew up on a dairy farm, although I'm not sure his experience from the 1930s and 40s would be helpful. If you want to talk to some farmers here's how I'd go about contacting them. Get in touch with the co-op that they sell their milk to. Ask the co-op for the contact information, they'd know who has a herd the size you're looking for. Someone like Reiter's: http://www.reiterdairy.com/management-team As a random aside, I grew up in the Midwest, my wife did as well. We have cheese and corn flowing through our blood. We never realized how much of each we ate until we moved away from the Midwest, apparently the rest of the US doesn't include cheese in 90% of their meals... If you want to talk to farmers asap, you have to understand that "city folk just don't get it". BG2008
I can totally see the first date being Farmer Gal "So, what's your favorite brand of tractor?" Investor pretending to be interested in Dairy "The bigger the better! Now, does so and so product have pricing power? What are the factors in determining whether you treat a cow or cull it from the herd?" If you want to talk to some farmers here's how I'd go about contacting them. yadayada
The tough part is actually getting the diary's, the owners usually don't give them up that easily.
