netnet
There is also probably going to be a thread @ Berkshire Hathaway instead of here, but the Daily Journal Annual Meeting is March 25. Anybody want to do lunch afterwards?
NoCalledStrikes
I am planning on attending the DJCO Annual Meeting and in the spirit of value would like to use my Marriott points for a room the night before, but it appears the the Marriott chain doesn't have anything in the downtown area for the night before (too bad the meeting is not in Pasadena). Could an Angelino help give me the commute times from my available choices in LAX, Burbank, Santa Monica, or Pasadena to downtown LA by 10a with a healthly cushion to spare and meet up with other Mungerheads? Bad traffic doesn't particularly bother me, but missing the meeting due to bad traffic would. Thanks,
merkhet
I'll be in town for the meeting again. We had pretty good luck (after my initial bungling) at finding a nearby lunch spot last year. Maybe an LA native should take care of the lunch plans this year, though. :)

We flew out of there a few years ago, all the major airlines, cheaper tickets and zero crowds or hassle. If you can find a flight to Burbank airport it might be worth staying near there and commuting in.
OracleofCarolina
Yes..I flew into Burbank last year..it seemed just as close as LAX and no crowds..I am doing it again this year...highly encourage you to fly through Burbank

If you can find a flight to Burbank airport it might be worth staying near there and commuting in. For the DJCO meeting last year and for the Wesco meetings, as well as most LA trips, downtown and north, I also fly into Burbank. Last year I shared an Uber ride with JBird, we came in at about the same time. It was on the order of 20 to 25 minutes. So if you give yourself a full hour you should be good. I'll be in town for the meeting again. We had pretty good luck (after my initial bungling) at finding a nearby lunch spot last year. Maybe an LA native should take care of the lunch plans this year, though. :) The place I picked out as a value (read cheap) pick was like a classic value trap, totally inadequate. 8) As for restaurants, the place where we finally landed worked, Zip Fusion Sushi, (modernist Japanese inspired Asian Fusion), was pretty good, and they had space. The place next door Umami burger seems to have a line at every branch I've been to; as for going west on 1st, the further west the prices tend to go up, but there are some (value) noodle place . But I defer to any Angelenos who want to pipe up.

tinhb
Hi I'm 23 and I'm a student in Singapore. Right now I cannot afford to go to the US but I hope I can meet Charlie in the near future (before it is too late :P). I'm curious about what Charlie thinks of Mr. George Soros and his theory of reflexivity. I do not see him mention about reflexivity anywhere. Is it because he does not think much of reflexivity or that it is too complex and falls into the "too hard" pile? I cannot attend this meeting so I hope someone can help me ask this question. Thank you very much!
jawn619
can you also ask him why he sold Posco?
Matson125
I would be interested to hear his thoughts on the Costco Amex break up today considering he is on the board of COST and has a huge position in AMEX through BRK.

Quite different place. 8)

Jurgis
Looks right. OK, I am 90% coming. :) (Haven't got my tickets yet - trying to setup schedule with friends & family) Couple questions: - Where did you guys park? I looked on Google maps street view and I don't see any parking lots - there's one for the office building, but I don't think we can park there, can we? Was the street parking available? Could you park for more than 2 hours on the street? - I'd like to join for lunch. The area around the meeting place looks pretty desolate, but I guess Little Tokyo area should have some restaurants. It's <1 mile from the meeting place. - How do we recognize CoBF people? Secret handshake? Tulip in the jacket lapel? Cheap Walmart slacks? (just kidding). As I mentioned, I am not a shareholder right now. I guess I could buy 1 share for admission. Proxy does not mention any documents for attendance, so I guess I can get in. But if not, would one of you invite me as a guest? ;)
JBird
Booked my ticket back to LA for DJCO again this year. Repeating what I did last year since it worked so well. Arriving at Burbank at 7:30 am and taking an Uber to the meeting. That's about a $20 ride. If you're arriving around the same time, feel free to PM me and we'll save some cash on the ride over. Love to join everyone for lunch again afterwards. You do not need to own shares to attend! When you come in the door you're asked to sign a sheet listing your name, city, and number of shares held. I think it just amuses Charlie to see zero's next to virtually everyone's name.
netnet
I'm getting into Burbank at 8:30. Can share a Uber ride then. That should be enough time to go the 20 minute ride to the meeting.
rishig
I am getting in at LAX airport at 8:36 AM. Happy to share the uber ride if anyone else is reaching at about the same time.
Jurgis
I am driving on March 24th from Mountain View to LA. Not driving back (flying out of LAX late on March 25th). If anyone wants a one-way ride and 5+ hours of investment banter, let me know. 8) So how do we recognize fellow CoBFers at the meeting? I'm definitely interested in lunch after the meeting. Preferably a place with some veggie options. :) Though company is more important than the place. ;)
fkw1979
I'm in for lunch! Flying in from Houston the night before. Just joined the board and am looking to meet like minded people to talk shop. To echo Jurgis, how will I know how to find everyone? Is there a place we meet or should meet after the meeting? Evolveus
I'll be at the meeting as well. I live in South Pasadena, and I did some yelping about what's in the area near the meeting. Here are some things i found that might be of interest: Wurstkuche - a well known DTLA spot that does sausages and truffle fries. It is set up kinda like a German Style beer hall. Nice open space with picnic bench seating and good beers. 5-10min walk http://www.yelp.com/biz/wurstk%C3%BCche-los-angeles-2 Umami Burger is also near by. It's a 'high end' burger place that started in LA that is pretty tasty. 5-10min walk http://www.yelp.com/biz/umami-burger-los-angeles-11 There is also a lot of great sushi in the area. Sushi Gen is often heralded as one of the top sushi spots in LA. But the three yelp $$$ might not fly with the value crowd. 10-15min walk http://www.yelp.com/biz/sushi-gen-los-angeles There are probably some cheapo street taco shops in the area which are usually good too. I think Wurstekuche would be most accomodative for a larger group if that ends up being the case. I can pass thru the area one weekend and see if there is any good parking lots/spots. Jurgis
Wurstkuche or Sushi Gen sounds good for me. How safe is the area during the day? I might have to walk if I get a hotel nearby'ish. (I've lived in LA ~20 years ago - omg time flies, but I don't know this area).

Jurgis
Thanks. I might stay in Miyako, which is quite close. If I don't get abducted by friends/relatives/etc. :)
gfp
Just a heads up that Sushi Gen will usually have a really long wait / line and no ability to make a reservation (my recollection). Some of my favorite sushi though. (also closed between 2pm and 5:30pm)
merkhet
We passed on Umami burger last time because of the wait, IIRC. What about the sushi place we ended up last time? That seemed to work out okay.
