I will set up a lunch before the Yellow BRK's and a lunch after the Markel breakfast.  If another attendee wants to set up a dinner after the Yellow BRK's at a close restaurant that would be great.  Thanks and look forward to seeing y'all.

  • 3 weeks later...

Thanks for organizing this Packer!

I'll be going to the BRK meeting for the first time this year. What is the Yellow BRK's? Does anyone have any recommendations for me while I'm down there? You can count me in for the Lunch after the Markel Breakfast. Please let me know when things are finalized.

Also, is there anything I can do to help?

I'll give my usual recommendation for first time attendees.  You will need to arrive early to get good seats in the auditorium.  Doors open at 7am but there will be a long line by 6am.

However, what I've done in recent years is opted for one of the side ballrooms where the meeting is projected on big screens.  The seats are much more comfortable and its easier to hear.  The auditorium will be full in the morning but after the lunch-break, a lot of seats open up because people leave (it is a very long meeting after-all).  You can always make your way into the stadium at that point in time.  If you do opt to sit in one of the side ballrooms, you'll be fine showing up between 7:30 and 8:00am.

Also, many of Berkshire's subsidiary companies will be displaying their products, and in some cases, offering substantial discounts in the convention area connected to the Century Link center.  Last year, they made a smart move by having the convention center open for vendors on Friday in addition to Saturday.  In previous years, you'd basically have to leave the meeting to go check out the subsidiaries in the convention center.  My suggestion, if you want to shop and don't want to miss any of the meeting, is to go to the convention center area on Friday afternoon.

Finally, I would avoid the cocktail party at Borsheims (which is on Friday evening).  Its always so packed you can barely move.  Takes forever to get a cocktail and food.  The brunch on Sunday is better.  If you get there early there won't be many people and you can check things out.  Buffett and Bill Gates traditionally show up in the early afternoon to participate in some of the entertainment aspects of the brunch.

If you want to have good investment conversations with other value investors, go to the Yellow BRKer party on Friday and some of the other gatherings mentioned by others in this thread.  You'll find that there are a lot of people from the general public who show up to the annual meeting and other events.  A lot of people are there just because they admire Buffett and want to be part of the excitement.  I'm sure the Berkshire meeting is the biggest event Omaha hosts every year.

Thanks a lot tede02!

So it sounds like I need to get there before 6am if I want to have any chance of being in the auditorium from the very beginning?

Does anyone know if Lyft and Uber are useful for getting around this time of year?

Thanks for setting up the lunches Packer.  I plan to be at both.  Will have a fellow COB&F member joining me as well.  Thanks,  Wes

Not sure if anyone is interested but the Nebraska CFA Society is putting on a dinner Thursday night for $75. The keynote speakers are Steven Lipper and Steven McBoyle and the presentation title is "Small Cap Investing: Perspectives & Moat Analysis". I thought it sounded interesting. Lowlight and I will be attending. Links and details below.

Thank you Packer. I won't be able to make it for lunch on 29th as I would be driving towards Omaha. I wanted to ask you if you are still planning a dinner after YellowBRK meeting. I would be interested to learn more about that. Please advise.

The time & place for April 29 lunch is 1100 at Lo Sole Mio:

3001 S. 32nd Ave | Omaha, NE 68105

This is a great Italian restaurant.  I have set up a reservation for 12 to 15 under the name Keith.

Thank you. I would have helped but this is my first trip there and I have no idea what to pick. Let's wait and see if someone arranges. Can you also please provide details on lunch after Markel brunch? I mean location. Thanks and much appreciated for your efforts.

I have not set up a dinner. If someone wants to do that, that would be great.  I can if no one volunteers.

Yes there is room on Friday at Lo Sole Mio.  I will put you down.  We have had Friday dinner at Sullivan's Steakhouse twice before but anywhere near the Yellow BRK meeting works.  The Yellow BRKs is at Capitol & 15th at the Doubletree. Thanks for setting this up.

The places I called for Friday night wanted an exact head count for a reservation. Jackson street tavern could do 7pm, up to 15 people (with a head count). Hopefully it's quiet enough for conversation. If it sounds good, please confirm by tomorrow afternoon. Or if you have another idea, please share it!
