dustin_johnson25
I'm interested to know if anyone has recommendations regarding management or investors to follow in the natural resources sector, specifically mining? Tough to think of a long list of Outsider-type management that have consistently created value for shareholders the sector but thought I would solicit some views. To date my thoughts are: Mining: Ross Beaty Pierre Lassonde Robert Friedland Seymour Schulich Murray Edwards Energy: Don Gray Would love to get other people's opinion on these guys and anyone else to add to the list. Thanks!
TedKord
Not sure what you consider an "outsider type manager" but I'd put Randy Smallwood, CEO of SLW, on your list. I don't know if they invented streaming, but they certainly were instrumental in institutionalizing it. I think SLW was the first firm to understand that a neither a gold mine nor a base metal mine was ever going to be valued on their silver by-product. SLW could buy that stream and be revalued as a pure play silver company. They have grown too big to use that strategy exclusively nowadays, but I've always thought of these guys as leaders in the space. I'm a huge fan of Robert Friedland, and a shareholder of IVN, but I don't know how much you can learn from him. I guess the takeaway would be get involved in large scale assets and be an excellent salesman.
dustin_johnson25
Thanks TedKord. By outsider type manager I was referring to the book The Outsiders but that is probably too specific. Basically looking for any management or investors to follow in the space that have a shareholder mindset, able to be contrarian, history of value creation... etc. Thanks for the recommendation regarding Randy Smallwood. netnet
I would add Brian Dalton (much discussed on this board--Altius) Michael O'Keefe (Champion Iron, very little discussion) Both are counter cyclical investors, Dalton has a continuing business, Altius that buys and stockpiles land in the downturn in order to prospect generating in the upturn. O'Keefe buys in the trough and sells out completely during the peak. There is a former board member, Dazel, who had some excellent posts on outsider types, but it appears that he withdrew completely from this board, so I think his posts, unless quoted are gone, but it is worth a search. (the way back machine may have them though.)
