Some positive European news : Austria, Denmark & Norway have now introduced plans for gradually, slowly & carefully reopenings of societies.

Definitely positive. Our President (Cuomo), who has already accomplished the highest volume of testing per capita (even though NY is among the most populated states), is now talking about antibody testing -- those with proven immunity to be let out first. Seems like a decent strategy, but the concern is that may be too small a number to celebrate "reopening". Nice to have a cautious, reasoned leader though.

Just elaborating a bit about what's going on here about Denmark [Perhaps Per [CoBF member perulv] will elaborate a bit about what's going on in Norway] : Schools class 0 - 5 will open just after Easter [will create an enormous productivity gain for the parents still working from home! [ : - ) ]]. Pupils in the highest classes will start in school, too, to prepare for exit exams.

The intent is to gradually & carefully build herd immunity, in a controlled & closely monitored way [& roll-back, if things start to escalate again]. It reads right to me - We will eventually end in the Stone Age, if this continues - an extreme hard lock-down on March 12th 2020.

More oxygen to zombie businesses hit by this under discussion.

Better than nothing, & just for starters.

As a #metooCOVID-19? without access to testing [as of now] to get clarity, I have today found a short-cut : I'm an inactive Danish blood donor [have been a donor since I turned 18]. About 15 years ago I deactivated my account, because I was running on/off on pain killers for a bit less than a couple years because of a bad back. Tomorrow I'll activate my account again. The Danish blood banks use the taps for COVID testing, providing data to get a handle on the dark COVID numbers.

Awesome report John - keep that stuff coming.

Viking, I don’t disagree. There’s blame to be had pretty much everywhere. I’ve said as much. It’s typical of pretty much any situation; something goes wrong and people feel the need to point fingers.

My greater point was to highlight how ridiculous we can get, on both sides, if we really want to engage in deliberate cherry picking, misrepresentation, and peddling of partisan propaganda.

Very well put - nice to see some balance as opposed to the one size fits all in this thread.

I wonder if this risk (getting sued for not providing a safe work environment) slows getting back to work...

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/business/international-business/us-business/article-estate-of-walmart-employee-who-died-from-covid-19-sues-company-for/

The family of a Walmart Inc employee in Illinois who died after contracting COVID-19, the illness caused by the novel coronavirus, has filed a lawsuit accusing the retail giant of failing to adequately screen and protect workers.

The lawsuit filed in Illinois state court on Monday by the estate of Wando Evans says the Walmart store south of Chicago was not properly cleaned and employees were not given masks, gloves, antibacterial wipes or other protective equipment.

Evans died on March 25, and another employee at the same store died four days later from complications due to COVID-19, according to the complaint.

This is going to be a huge risk in Illinois - the ambulance chasing attorneys here, just about rule the state.

I hope this is not the case in other states, otherwise, we have trouble.

John, please keep the updates coming. It is great to get first hand information from countries that are a couple of weeks ahead of us regarding what the next phase might look like in other places :-)

Greg, you might want to watch this video from March 2. The doctor was from one of the hospitals in New York. He was not able to test for the virus. No tests were available. And he was freaking out. Washington State had the exactly same problem. Doctors KNEW they had virus issues. But they were unable to test.

-

The CDC completely screwed up. Their screw up allowed the clusters to form in Washington State and New York. The clusters in Washington State and New York then seeded the virus in many other regions in the US. This well documented. The current health and economic costs being bourne by the US are primarily due to the incompetence of the CDC. The US did not start testing for the virus in numbers until mid March. By then the genie was out of the bottle.

The CDC is a federally funded organization that takes its direction from the White House. Watch one of Trumps daily updates if you dispute how close the White House is directing the actions of the CDC.

——————————-

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the leading national public health institute of the United States. It is a United States federal agency, under the Department of Health and Human Services, and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.[2]

Yeah, it's the federal government that is in charge of the CDC, HHS, DHS, FDA, the national stockpile, army corps of engineers, etc.. They're the ones who are supposed to protect the country from what's happening right now as a first line of defense, and then coordinate resources and do clear national messaging/planning during the crisis, as well as coordinate with international allies and suppliers. Why are taxpayers paying for all that if not for times like these?

The failure of the federal government is what is leading to individual governors having to pick up the slack as best as they can, but they don't have the federal bodies dedicated to this, and 50 of them can't help but work at cross-purposes and cause even more problems when they all try to bid on the same supplies at the same time. It's the whole point of being a federation. Meanwhile, the president's failed-developer son-in-law is running point on a pandemic, because when you're highly corrupt, you always put loyalty above competence, because someone who's competent but not entirely loyal will turn on you and expose you, so you can't have that...

It's amazing that people can see the blatant failures of government in the current yet continue to advocate for more. All while the innovations and solutions come directly from private industry and people thinking on their feet.  ;D

FWIW:

https://www.factcheck.org/2020/03/false-claim-about-cdcs-global-anti-pandemic-work/

"Those hypothetical cuts were avoided, however, because Congress later provided more funding for the CDC’s global health programs, the CDC told us in a statement. "

“CDC did not have to cut back its work from 49 to 10 countries,” said Maureen Bartee, CDC’s associate director for Global Health Security, in a statement to FactCheck.org. “In the FY18-FY20 annual appropriations, CDC received base appropriations for global health security from Congress. This was used to continue the essential public health capacity development in the four core areas that was started in 2014 with the one-time supplemental funds.”

"Those amounts went up again in fiscal year 2020, when the CDC was awarded $183 million for global public health protection, overall, and $125 million specifically for its global health security efforts. For fiscal year 2021, President Donald Trump has requested that CDC funding for global disease detection and other programs be increased further — to $225 million total, with $175 million going directly to global health security.

With its current funding, Bartee said, the CDC is actually working in “more than 60 countries” — not 10 — to address the threat of global infectious diseases and outbreaks."

Ideologues plugging their talking point at any chance. To the hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Am I advocating for more government? Where?

How about effective government for the things where you need it?

If you need a military, would you rather an incompetent, corrupt one or a well-run one? How about the same for pandemic response?

Hard to argue that pandemic situations (which is all about rapid collective response/coordination) would be better without government, or with a much smaller government, when even the republicans are falling over themselves to spend 2.2 trillion (so far) to keep the country from falling into the deepest depression since the 1930s.. asking for 250bn more today.

Glad about the CDC. Still, funding's not everything, you also have to be smart enough to understand what your experts are telling you (can you imagine Trump reading a report before making his mind? He just goes by what his handlers tell him, or what he sees on cable TV), or at least surround yourself with people smarter than you are and listen to them, and act rationally on it, rather than be surrounded by sycophants who tell you what you want to hear because you get angry at anyone who doesn't, and then spend weeks on wishful thinking (it's air-tight, it's just the flu, it'll go away soon, it's a few cases, etc) and blaming others.

I mean, they also have NASA and NOAA telling them about global warming, but they don't listen to that either.

Damn right - you got to love revisionist history - it's so pathetic.

I was listening to one of the February Democratic Presidential Debates again - NOT ONE WORD ABOUT CORONA VIRUS. NOT ONE!

THE BIGGEST CRISIS OF OUR LIFETIME - BUT NOW - THEY HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS!

Here a couple of links i found on Calculated Risk blog:

COVID-19: The Square Root Recovery?

https://oregoneconomicanalysis.com/2020/04/07/covid-19-the-square-root-recovery/

Three Things Will Determine If There’s an Economic Depression

https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2020-04-06/how-to-keep-coronavirus-recession-from-becoming-a-depression

...The U.S unemployment report for March foreshadowed the ugly numbers to come as the economy’s sudden stop sidelines entire sectors. The prospect of double-digit unemployment rates raises the possibility that what is now the “Great Suppression” will become the next Great Depression. This raises an important question for market participants: What separates a depression from a recession? A starting place is to consider the three “Ds” of a depression: Depth, duration, and deflation.

...One bad quarter does not make a depression. In reality, the long-run health of the economy depends on controlling the virus. Whether or not this economic collapse turns into a depression still depends on the actions of policy makers in coming months.

What a word thinker you are. Conversely, if they had talked about it, you still wouldn't be happy, because you don't care about what you're saying here, just about trying to score points.

Meanwhile, Trump was praising China and Xi: https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1220818115354923009?s=20

The president runs the CDC/FDA/DHS/HHS/NSA/CIA/CENTCOM/etc, he gets briefed on everything that's going on, he's the one in charge, the one governing. He picks his advisors and secretaries, and if they're incompetent and don't bring stuff up to him or manage it well, it's also his fault.

Candidates in a party's primary don't. Governors either. Saying that others' didn't do the president's job is pointless. They're not the president. They have a different job.

But I'm pretty sure that if any rando off the street was currently president, his son-in-law wouldn't be running a pandemic response, though. They probably would've also studied up enough on the situation to not make the most dumbass comments about the virus at every press conference.

And what genius you are!  These candidates had EVERYTHING to say about what the President does right and wrong.

They cover all the critical issues of Presidency - but of course, in February - they did not give a rat's ass about Coronavirus.

They have opinions about all the critical issues facing the country like diversity, green new deal, failed impeachment, crooked Hunter Biden,

and political correctness.

You should watch it - you'd be real proud.  NO BODY GAVE TWO SHITS ABOUT CV - NOT EVEN THE MEDIA. NOT ONE FRICKIN' QUESTION!

What hypocrisy! TODAY THEY ARE ALL EXPERT SECOND GUESSERS.

Just like the media.

Oh, yeah, the candidates ....."It's not their job" .... BUT THEY WANT TO BE PRESIDENT.

They really "nailed" the "issues" those critical thinkers...

Several months before the coronavirus pandemic began, the Trump administration eliminated a key American public health position in Beijing intended to help detect disease outbreaks in China, Reuters has learned...

Quick left amid a bitter U.S. trade dispute with China when she learned her federally funded post, officially known as resident adviser to the U.S. Field Epidemiology Training Program in China, would be discontinued as of September, the sources said. The U.S. CDC said it first learned of a “cluster of 27 cases of pneumonia” of unexplained origin in Wuhan, China, on Dec. 31.

Why didn't Cuomo or De Blasio pick up the slack?

And those who are most ardent about the blatant failures of government (coincidentally, the government is most inept when they happen to be the ones running it) always find a way to fund things like Defense Dept and bloated contracts to companies like Boeing ("cost plus!"). It's national security (a form of precautionary principle), but defending against a pandemic or funding the EPA somehow not on the same level of priorities for those folks.

I don't get your point. Probably because you don't have one.

The criticism was never that Trump should've seen the future in January and done everything with perfect foresight, and so if the democratic candidates didn't get it perfectly back then either, then Trump can't be blamed. That's a total strawman that you made up, as is your habit.

It's also insane to claim that candidates have all the info that a sitting president has. When you're the president, there's someone in charge of a certain area (terrorism, public health, cybersecurity, whatever) that comes to you and briefs you, they don't go to candidates or journalists.

The idea is that stuff with the federal response started going wrong in January with the data they had at the time, kept going wrong in February with the data they had at the time, and kept going wrong in March, and is still going wrong today, and the US infection curve is clearly one of the worst in the world and the president has mostly been improvising/bullshitting through this whole thing, mostly caring about the impact on his reelection.

Oh, yeah, but they have Adam Schiff - Head of the Intelligence Committee - whispering in their ear - all the nations defense secrets/risks from overseas.

Oh - I forgot - Schiff was too tied up with Nadler & Pelosi trying to Impeach the President in February. Thanks for keeping the country safe!

I guess they took their eye off the ball and didn't do their job - no problem....just blame the President...after all, it's not like they

are trying to "score political points" anyway?

And thanks for that lesson on how the US Federal Government works - it's much appreciated!

Hey, I'm curious cubsfan. If Trump transfers all $2 trillion of Coronavirus money to his own bank accounts, how will you defend him?

(I doubt he will, but I am curious how you will defend him, so I figured I'd just ask directly.)

I've said it before Richard. I voted for Obama in 2008. I did not like Trump at all during the election process. I could not stand Hillary.

But it's Ground Hog Day once again - Russia Hoax, Ukraine Corruption, Kavanaugh, Stormy Daniels, etc, etc, etc,

Another shot to get rid of the dictator - where the opposition party and/or media share no responsibility for the state of the country.

In spite of being voted in - from Day 1 - the resistance began - the enormous bitterness - I've never seen anything like it.

I'm in favor of moving the country forward - which the President has done - love him or hate him.

Now Trump is a BLUNT INSTRUMENT for sure.  Many, many people love him - although many also do not approve of his tactics.

So you are free to keep going. There is an election right around the corner. It will all be settled soon.

"Michael Burry, the doctor-turned-investor who famously bet against mortgage securities before the 2008 financial crisis, has taken to Twitter with a controversial message: lockdowns intended to contain the coronavirus pandemic are worse than the disease itself...

“Universal stay-at-home is the most devastating economic force in modern history,” Burry wrote in an email to Bloomberg News. “And it is man-made. It very suddenly reverses the gains of underprivileged groups, kills and creates drug addicts, beats and terrorizes women and children in violent now-jobless households, and more. It bleeds deep anguish and suicide.”

Dr. Burry tells Bloomberg that he would “lift stay-at-home orders except for known risk groups. We already know certain conditions that are predictive of severe disease. Especially since young healthy lungs tend to be resistant, I would let the virus circulate in the population that is not likely to get severe disease from it. This is the only path that comes close to balancing the needs of all groups.”

Is the church of “scientific consensus” going to change their view? Will the epidemiological popes allow Galileo to give his opinion or will he be burned at the stake for heresy? My guess is the latter...

The jump in US deaths according to http://covidtracking.com over the last 24 hours is staggering (1,941 deaths).

1,941 deaths in a day exceeds average number of U.S. deaths from heart disease (~1700-1800) in a day. Tragic. Clearly aggressive action was necessary. Hopeful that the slowing in growth of cases leads to peak in mortality soon.
