WORK - Slack

Certainly, there will be a positive network effect in the sense that a client might ask you, "are you on Slack?" for their preferred method of communication. I can see in the future many businesses will have to adopt Slack because many of their stakeholders might be already using it.

What I'm more curious about is whether Slack is "sticky". Many of the enterprise software businesses are wonderful because their software is sticky. The Oracle database is the prototypical example but newer software like JIRA by Atlassian can be very sticky because it's used to store all the bugs in your products that may be kept there for years lol. Not sure how sticky Slack is. It's nice to keep the contents in Slack alive but it seems easy to export historical contents and not sure if they would prevent users from switching to another software.

The biggest (known) risk is Microsoft Teams pretty much bulldozing Slack in organizations. I know some places that use Slack and some places that use Teams. I think there's very little chance that Teams organizations will take up Slack in the future. Not sure about the opposite.

Edit: well, Stratechery covers this and more. One note though: IIUC MS Teams are also trying/supporting some limited version of shared channels across organizations. Not sure if it's going to be good and adopted though.

  • 2 weeks later...

When we started working from home in March everyone at my company was just using Skype, then around June we started migrating to Teams, but not everyone migrated over, now it seems some people and groups are migrating to Slack, but not everyone.  So I now keep Skype, Teams, and Slack running at all times and communicate with different people in each one.  We use zoom too for larger meetings.  I'm not sure how this is all going to go, but I almost wish my company would pick one and get rid of the licenses for the others.  Skype isn't sufficient, but Teams and Slack would both do.
