P.1 Strain

Anyone well informed on this or know anyone in Brazil. This WSJ article makes it seem like it is impacting younger folks and maybe more deadly. However it seems somewhat anecdotal and unclear if it is just due to lack of vaccination and premature reopening. Don’t want to overreact but also don’t want to just brush it off.

This variant is of a concern because it can reinfect those that previously had COVID-19 apparently. The evidence from Manaus, which was supposed to have reached heard immunity but now sees another wave suggests so.

Evidence suggests that vaccines still protect against this variant too, but data is scarce.

The Pfizer vaccine is still effective against that. I think JNJ's only 50% effective. Moderna is more likely to be in consistency with Pfizer.

Yes, it seems the mRNA vaccines are pretty robust against all the variants so far. This makes them likely the weapon of choice against the epidemic. I think we will probably see a “booster” that enhances the profile against variants for those that have been vaccinated already by next year.

The P1 strain  is still a huge concern for countries that used mostly conventional vaccine or countries that are relying on natural herd immunity, which may not be achieved with the ongoing variants the virus is able to produce to overcome natural resistance.
