Parsad
Please use this specific board for discussing actual investment ideas primarily about specific equities. When you start a new topic, please use the form "BRKA - Berkshire Hathaway" - ticker symbol and then name of the company. The "General Discussion" board should be used for all other general topics, including macro-economic discussions. The "Investment Idea" Board is specifically for investments only. Cheers! netnet
I assume that a general question about say insurance companies or gold or arbitrage should still go here. Yes?
Parsad
No, I would put those questions in the "General Discussion" Board. That way the "Investment Ideas" board only shows ticker symbols and names on the sub-headings for threads. Cheers!
stahleyp
sanj, maybe you could give us the ability to gives "kudos" or something to members? That way people could build up their reputation a bit.
ragnarisapirate
sanj, maybe you could give us the ability to gives "kudos" or something to members? That way people could build up their reputation a bit. Respectfully, I disagree. I think it is a bad idea to give people a reputation based on people's perception of their ideas, rather, than how their analysis turned out... not to say that the end result was a manifestation of a persons analysis... Many (including myself) have had bad analysis, but good results.
Parsad
In regards to "Kudos". Yes, I agree with Ragnar. Someone with numerous kudos would automatically lead readers to assume their analysis is correct, whereas someone with little in the way of kudos would be relegated to being a less read thread. This happens on the Motley Fool all the time. There are alot of rubbish ideas by some people on there with a lot of recommendations. On another note, how friggin' hard is it for boardmembers to post a new topic in the "Investment Ideas" board in this format: Ticker Symbol (exchange if necessary, non-US stock) - Name of Company For such bright people, how god-damn lazy are some of you? ;D Cheers! Parsad
Lol someone sounds compulsive . I was just thinking the same thing though. Partly, but it also saves me a few seconds of my life spent fixing something trivial like that. And it looks better and more uniform...flick the light switch...1,2,3,4...on, off, on, off! ;D Thank God the only compulsive trait I have is not ever missing a Canucks game or my Colts games! Cheers! gokou3
On another note, how friggin' hard is it for boardmembers to post a new topic in the "Investment Ideas" board in this format: Ticker Symbol (exchange if necessary, non-US stock) - Name of Company Suggestion: Perhaps one should include the ticker price (and currency, if not in USD) in the subject at the time of posting too. This may reduce ambiguity on multiple issues (A-B shares; different series of preferred/warrants) and also easily review the investment returns in the future. Agreed I like it also. Glad to see someone else is compulsive. Quick question, would you like to track quarterly updates within those threads as well. I think it would help keep everything in the right place but some may prefer to break things out. I really like that we have just 1 or 2 FBK posts. Parsad
It's probably a good idea. Maybe the person who starts the thread should follow up on the investment idea until it peeters out or something happens. Cheers!
beerbaron
Is it possible to have updated quotes in the forum? I would be great if we would have the initial price of the thread and the current price. BeerBaron
ExpectedValue
Is it possible to have updated quotes in the forum? I would be great if we would have the initial price of the thread and the current price. BeerBaron I don't think that is possible. Maybe as part of the standard posting layout for the idea board, people could include a google finance / yahoo finance link at the beginning of the post? Partner24
I'm late in that thread, but it's a terrific idea Sanjeev. With that thread, we go back IMO to one of the basics of this message board that make it truly unique. By the way, I've notified that the board have been more "quiet", respectful, civilized and productive over the last week or so. It's great! Regarding the general karma of a poster, I also agree with Sanjeev, but some of us might remember the "Recommend" post feature of the old board and, to me, it was something valuable. Cheers! Parsad
One important note: If a ticker already exists, please do not start a new thread for a company. All duplicate tickers will be removed and you would have wasted your time posting! I don't want the board inundated with the same ticker symbol. By having one ticker symbol per company, we also form a comprehensive archive or database of posts for that one company. Anyone wanting to research that ticker, only has to look it up once and not do a separate search! All you have to do is click on the "subject" tab and the ticker's will be alphabetical. You can easily see if a specific company already has their ticker on the board. Thanks! Cheers!

This happens on the Motley Fool all the time. There are alot of rubbish ideas by some people on there with a lot of recommendations. At the same time its very difficult for a new person to get get good ideas noticed. I'm just wondering if the same person who will assume an idea is good because it gets a lot of kudos will think an idea is bad because the poster doesn't have an illustrious track record. Makes it harder for a new poster to break in.

Packer is one of the most followed investors here, but I just dont warm to any of his ideas. I am sure most people hate the O&G / tradey nature of my ideas. Similar to VIC, people will buy and comment when they see something they like. I am looking into ASPS and some of the Chinese holdings mentioned by Yada. Also buying RJET on Monday thanks to the thread. I bought Clarke because of the thread, and many other piled in after the discussion. Many still follow FTP, SD, and ATSG long after I moved on. Some just made 30% on ATSG. A good idea, will sell itself. You are just the messenger.

Edit: By the way Myth, we ought to talk a bit about FTP and SD. Two very informative and formative stocks that rank high on the board and also two stories that were developing for years and still are. It's crazy thinking back what feels like many years ago and discussing (gambling really) on what Tom Ward would do next etc. When it was all said and done, SD was a multiple bagger for me and I think FTP was a small gain 15 or 20% or thereabouts, however I consider those two to be my only big mistakes to date, regardless of the money I made. I am glad, I went through those fairly early on, they kicked up my learning curve by a factor of 10 at least.
Myth465
I would agree. Its interesting to think about it. I made money very early on with Sd then lost a bit of it and sold. All and all it worked out ok, but provided a great lesson. I lost a tiny bit of money on FTP, and it too provided a good lesson. You are doing well if those are your 2 only mistakes and they were both profitable. My mistake sheet is much much longer :)

Parsad - I've noticed several times in the past that people have looked for tickers but for whatever reasons could not find them and then they opened a thread ... I can also tell you from personal experience that sometimes I look for threads I KNOW exist but cannot locate them through the search function for whatever reason ... eclecticvalue
This is a notice to everyone who looks for ideas in this category. If you want a quick way of finding if an idea has been posted. Click on the subject text and it automatically sorts everything alphanumerically. Then where the page numbers are press the ... (it is after 3) and it will expand all the page numbers so you find the tickers faster. Yes you could type the ticker on the search bar and it should pop up the results but it doesn't show everything for some reason.
dwy000
Well there goes my morning. I'm going to spend about 2 hours poking around and figuring out the new site, layout and features. I would have posted this as a new topic in General but it seems that (for now?) the only new topics allowed are in Investment Ideas. The look is great and some of the new features are cool. It will take a while to get used to though
Gregmal
I second that. For a techtard like me, might take a while to get everything down. But generally speaking it looks good!
