LVLT - Level 3

Thanks to my local library I heard something new today. If it's TRUE, then they better move with LIGHTENING SPEED to assist at ending the tyranny which is a Rockefeller, one of the few DEMOCRATS who doesn't believe in a free and open internet. I have sourced that fact previously, knowing full well that, even before he revealed his utter disdain for the internet in text; he refused to modify "ownership laws" tied to "securities" to assist "emerging companies" like Level 3 during the heat of the 08/09 stock market crash.

Storey said, they won't be able to rest until they connect to every one of the "rounded" one hundred thousand buildings that are just 500' from (3)'s network. There was some question surrounding why the number never goes down, with the analyst knowing that they have only connected to 8K at this time with numbers having been raised by just a few hundred "new connections" over the past year or so.

There's a lot of work and capital spending in front of them; otherwise, at the current connect rate of just 400 buildings per year, it will take (3) another 250 years to "connect" to their 100K enterprise buildings that he says he won't rest until completed. Of course, Storey will be DEAD for at least 200 years by the time this goal is reached according to the current run rate. I also heard "financing" is "never" a problem for (3) when talking about bringing the right "seller" to them as a "buyer."

Brker_guy, I sure hope GOOG, MSFT, AMZN, or some respected financier heard your earlier plea to assist in reducing the current trajectory we are on, and the associated timeline identified above so these LAST MILE TITANS get what needs to be given to them!

The FCC if it wasn't already, is going to be a limp noodle in having any meaningful effect to design laws or enforce that a fair and open internet is adhered to by these MONOPOLISTS who have The Rockefeller Dynasty on their side.

Jim Crowe better start moving the ball towards the FTC for relief about now. FWIW, I sure do hope that they vet this Chinese American Commerce Secretary, Gary Locke, with a microscope before approving him as an Ambassador in ongoing trade with them. imo

<Meanwhile, THE HILL adds that with the coming departure of Democratic Commissioner MICHAEL COPPS from the FCC, JESSICA ROSENWORCEL, the top telecommunications aide to Sen. JAY ROCKEFELLER (D-WV), is the likely pick for COPPS' position and could also be a possible FCC Chair if GENACHOWSKI goes to Commerce.>

I am absolutely convinced that, if Bill and Warren do not get on the LVLT gravy train ASAP, this Lebanese Mexican controlling crucial telecom/internet assets in his region, is going to TROUNCE them on the WEALTH METER forever!  ;D Wake up Warren!

I am hearing grumbling sounds that, Laslow Birinyi is readying to take a control stake in (3) with the profits he made from Apple, if Warren doesn't make his move to finance the people in America-including Omaha-that he has great "confidence in." This is no "BULL" except that it remains a "BULL MARKET" in Laslow's mind. imo

<The leaders of the equity bull market are shifting as the U.S. economic expansion accelerates and investors become more willing to risk money on companies where weaker economic growth or earnings increases have pushed down valuations.>

Yes, I had seen this Brker_guy. However, unless they can mix it into a bill which the President can't refuse, he will VETO it. How could it be that, an anti-Obama supporter, can be rooting for him in this matter?  ??? I'm sure they will do that although the lack of "basic understanding" by these strong right CLOWNS really does surprise me further confirming your comment describing same!

I told you Brker_guy, you can't make fiction up this good! Truly, that Rockafella Fat Cat remains as big a problem for freedom loving, liberty seeking people!

Brker_guy, I will share my LVLT secret with you and why I never worry like you're worrying today, it seems. To begin with, I have listened to every one of its conference calls since the dawn of its creation, and to say I have heard things which were HUBRIS would be an understatement. In keeping with this theme, you have to remember that, "MONEY IS NEVER A PROBLEM FOR (3)," even being reiterated by Jeff Storey the other day when talking about "consolidation," which is implicitly connected to the financing of those buildings he would have to live to be Methuselah in order to finish in his lifetime as was suggested. "We won't rest until we connect to every one of those buildings," he said.

Because of this, while knowing that end users in the enterprise and consumer spaces are always eager to find more cost effective alternatives than the incumbents attempting to keep them in The Dark Ages with DEAR PRICES, in conjunction with the fact that the internet flood gates towards ubiquitous video are WIDE OPEN; we are at an inflexion point where putting it to THE MONOPOLISTS by CRASHING down their GATES notwithstanding their captured regulators and politicians; is upon us.

You can't have the kind of HUBRIS I have heard for so long without having DADDY WARBUCKS behind you, even if Daddy won't appear as though he's buying a new pair of shoes for you.

If you do have such hubris without the checkbook behind you, you're a complete fool and idiot and I haven't been able to assess that as being the case for Crowe and his minion.

So let me summarize this for you this way. Mr. Buffett's confidence in America during the balance of his short life span left on Planet Earth, will not be accomplished without the internet remaining free and open along with unfettered access across the globe. I have called the internet, "The Great Liberator," for bringing peace and prosperity to global citizens, and I firmly believe that.

It won't matter that the TITANS and their SILLY POLITICIANS are moving COUNTER to citizens' best interest in this epic battle, because as soon as he begins the FINANCING into business HOMES(100K US ENTERPRISE BUILDINGS), the SHIFT is going to put it to those SOB's like we have been hearing CROWE pound his CHEST about for a long time now!!!!!!!!!!!! THUMP, THUMP, and I hear Ivan Siedenberg CRASHING into another TREE like during his POLE CLIMBING DAYS at Bell Atlantic, now VZ! Woe to those SOB's with their dwindling market shares and pent up pension and healthcare obligations from a DINOSAUR AGE!  >:(

Carl, you got your streaming problems fix now?

Well, I hope you are right.  All of the data that I have looked at regarding the OTT contents and in particularly the consumption of video by consumers, there isn't one network that I can think of other than (3) which can meet that demand.  May be I am biased in my views, but I have worked in the world of video for a very long time.  Video, unlike any other app, is a BW HOG!

I think their strategy of going after the gamers is an extremely smart strategy to get BW consumption going.  3D graphics are the next hogger of BW.

It has come nearly full circle for us because I am reading that Angry Birds(the hottest app on the smart phone) just landed $42MIL in VC funding..

Who knew that an app company that would land so much VC investment?  So, I think the BW demand is there; the network is there to use up those fibers.

This is the time and the year for us, Carl.  I can't wait to see the last mile MONOPOLISTS die...

No, Brker_guy. The Real and Window Media Players are an anathema to my desk top and has something to do with Google Geek preferences versus those. The Adobe Media player which is installed apparently, worked like a charm on Day One of the Storey conference, I came to find out later!

Yes, my bias has come with plenty of skin in Crowe's game. We have peeled through the fifth layer at about this time.  >:( Somebody must pay for that, and it might as well be Ivan Siedenberg, Brian Roberts and their ILK.

Although I don't see Jeff's comment about "not resting until (3) connects to all 100K enterprise buildings," here is a great review of what he stated during his conferences this week.

Actually, the graphics are rendered locally, so what is send over the network is usually pretty small, on the order of a few kb/s or maybe up to a few tens of kb/s. What matters most to gamers is usually latency (a low ping).

Hardcore gamers can still use a lot of bandwidth because they spend hours and hours connected to the server, and many gaming sub-communities upload replays and game commentaries on youtube, but the gaming itself isn't anywhere near video when it comes to kb/s.

Did you guys see this article on TelecomRamblings about Tata's expansion of their IaaS services into Singapore?

http://www.telecomramblings.com/newswire/2011/03/tata-communications-launches-international-cloud-services-in-singapore/

InstaCompute is an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) offering that is secure, elastic and on-demand. Computing and storage resources are delivered to businesses over Tata Communications’ IP backbone and MPLS networks, as and when they need them.

So now Tata has both a CDN and IaaS biz that they can bundle with their communications services.  I wonder when (3) will make any announcements regarding their provisioning of communications services to US and European IaaS providers?

Interestingly, Tata is using "compute and storage infrastructure from Dell," which happens to be the largest holding in my portfolio.

Here is adding to your gaming community segment. IPTV possibly on XBOX 360 console. It has been talked about for a couple of years but seems more serious this year.

Would be nice to connect the dots and provide some of that bandwidth. Hopefully (3)'s new Euro client can help pass along that news to MSFT.

txlaw, are you attempting to be cute by connecting dots-one of my favorite games as a kid-to Mr. Watsa by default?  ;) Tata, Watsa, Asia, Dell, India, but why is Canada so sleepy on the telecommunications front? It must be those price gougers at Rogers Communications who resemble those Roberts' at Comcast!

The other thing that has been asleep and hiding inside of (3), is Sunit's Boy Wonder, Neel Dev, an MNA finance guru, and how his tea sipping trips to Mumbai and other parts of the South Asian Tiger will bear fruit trees for (3)?  ;D Then of course, there's that "Merchant Man" who came aboard to protect SEAM's interests, apparently, who remains MIA. I think I'll vote "NO CONFIDENCE" against him two months hence!

Announcements are fine, but the TRANSLATION into REVENUES is what has always remained MISSING for reasons hardly ever explained! When you're collecting FIFTEEN PERCENT out of operating profits, though, I guess too many REVENUES place such a STEADY STREAM into your own COFFERS at RISK. imo

Liberty, thanks for the info, but my point is this. If a game like World of Warcraft has 15 million players active, what would the total BW requirement be even for 10kbps of those 15mil users?  More players require bigger maps. Bigger maps mean lower quality graphics or lower frame rate. Now if you use a service like OnLive, you will get "server" side rendering and then transmit the video output to the user's computer/tv screen. All server rendering.

Talas, I saw that article at Rob's site. Tata is definitely having the right strategy. In the long run, they will give a run for (3)'s business model.

Mc33, let's hope that it won't be GoogleTV or WebTV revisited because all of those products never moved the needle on the BW consumption.

Thanks for sharing the cool links.

Carl & TxLaw, I guess from this article here, I think we can guess that this event at B of A happened before (3) landed the B of A account?

Also, did you see this?

http://www.emarketer.com/blog/index.php/stat-day-682-internet-audience-online-video-viewers/

In 2011, 68.2% of US internet users, or 158.1 million people, will be watching video online at least once a month. By 2015, 76% of the internet audience, or 195.5 million people, will be viewing video regularly online.

Finally, I sure hope all of you guys are not on AT&T DSL services.  They are about to cap their users:

After more than eleven years of maintaining their monopoly status quo as a result of NOT INNOVATING sufficiently and "EXPLOITING" their customers' "GOOD WILL," TREX and the balance of telecom and cable TITANS at the MONOPOLY GATES are intent on implementing USE CHARGES and TIERED PRICING excluding the fact that they make no mention of a fair system for delivering crucial, essential "BANDWIDTH" tied to "FACTUAL COSTS" for reconciling the PAST with the PRESENT!

It's time for the END RUN which offers all market participants an alternative "SOLUTION" to bypass these SOB's and CUT their CORDS at FURIOUS PACES so that they're TOPPLED in the end!!!!! I want to see a TOPPLING of this GREED and AVARICE like Egypt's Mubarak! IMO

Here's a VISUAL for these MONOPOLISTS to be FEARFUL of!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0LCEwYjIMI&feature=related

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--If Internet service providers had their way, the word " unlimited" would be stricken from the dictionary.

AT&T Inc.'s (T:$28.00,00$-0.4600,-1.62%) plan to charge its largest consumers of Internet data more is the latest step taken to get people out of the mindset that online access is an all-you-can-eat buffet. It's part of a broader shift by companies on both the wireless and fixed-line sides to get consumers comfortable with a usage-based pricing model, in line with how the service is delivered elsewhere around the world.

"All-you-can-eat is a uniquely American service," said Dan Hays, who covers telecom for consultancy PRTM. Consumers, who have enjoyed years of flat-rate pricing for Internet, may have a hard time accepting limits on their landline service, analysts said.

AT&T (T:$28.00,00$-0.4600,-1.62%) said it made the move because a small percentage of customers has been using a disproportionate amount of data, causing congestion in certain points of the network and interfering with other people's access.

As a result, starting May 2, AT&T (T:$28.00,00$-0.4600,-1.62%) would limit consumers of its basic Internet plan to 150 gigabytes of data each month, which equates to roughly 75 DVD- quality movies or 37,500 songs. If a consumer exceeds that monthly limit three times, AT&T (T:$28.00,00$-0.4600,-1.62%) would begin charging the person $10 for every additional 50 gigabytes of data used.

The company said more than 98% of its 17.8 million customers fall under the limit. But that could change as more consumers opt to download videos through their Internet connection over watching broadcast TV, a practice known as "cord- cutting."

Critics said AT&T's (T:$28.00,00$-0.4600,-1.62%) action is motivated more by financial reasons than technical ones, and that the company is setting the foundation for a more extensive set of tiered pricing plans similar to its mobile service. Last year, the company moved away from unlimited wireless data and began offering two levels of capped data plans.

For mobile, though, it's easier to see how big broadband users can affect Internet service, where spectrum is finite and congestion and interference is often felt. It's harder to see how bandwidth-hogging by one wireline customer affects other people, critics said.

AT&T (T:$28.00,00$-0.4600,-1.62%) dimissed the idea that the change was made as a result of financial factors.

"The idea that this is a financial move is incorrect," said spokesman Mark Siegel. AT&T (T:$28.00,00$-0.4600,-1.62%) shares recently fell 1.4% to $28.06.

Hays said that if traffic was truly an issue, the carrier wouldn't offer heavy users the option of buying more service at an additional price. Gartner analyst Robert Mason disagreed, though, saying it's reasonable to see some strains because it is a shared network often running on older copper lines.

AT&T's (T:$28.00,00$-0.4600,-1.62%) move also is seen opening the door for other Internet providers to follow suit. While capacity isn't a major issue now, the companies are looking ahead to the prospect of more consumers downloading large video files, which has been the major driver of the explosion of bandwidth.

"We expect the cable operators to follow AT&T's (T:$28.00,00$-0.4600,-1.62%) move by introducing pricing plans that include caps for lower end packages," said Craig Moffett, analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Moffett said the logical reaction to more cord- cutting would be usage-based pricing.

Cablevision Systems Corp. (CVC:$34.94,00$-0.4900,-1.38%) and Comcast Corp. (CMCSA:$24.345,0$-0.605,0-2.42%) declined to comment, and a Time Warner Cable Inc. (TWC:$68.14,00$-0.6500,-0.94%) spokesperson wasn't immediately available. In October 2008, Comcast (CMCSA:$24.345,0$-0.605,0-2.42%) imposed a limit of 250 gigabytes. Currently, fewer than 1% of customers are affected.

Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ:$35.0881,$-0.7619,-2.13%) , which alongside Vodafone Group PLC (VOD:$28.442,0$-0.438,0-1.52%) owns Verizon Wireless, said it has no plans to roll out usage-based pricing for its fixed-line broadband customers, but it would continue to evaluate its options.

Verizon Wireless has said it plans to offer tiered data plans for its smartphones in the summer.

The company officials said that extended on-net services provide access to the company’s network in rural locations along the 42,000 route miles that span North America.

Officials said that direct access to the network outside of major metropolitan markets enables Level 3 to pick-up or deliver traffic at more locations, providing local carriers, cable operators and wireless companies with additional on-ramps to the Level 3 network.

"The Level 3 network travels through many of the rural communities that we want to connect to the world with wireless broadband," said Bill Beans, Jr., chief executive officer and founder of Open Range, in a statement.

He said that Level 3's expansive network footprint and direct network access provide the foundation to enable Internet communications for more and more Americans.

As part of the pact, Level 3 will provide the network infrastructure for Open Range to offer wireless broadband through 4G WiMAX networks in more than 500 communities in 17 states.

Traffic will then be routed over the Level 3 network to enable quality online communications for as many as six million Americans.

http://4g-wirelessevolution.tmcnet.com/wimax/topics/wimax/articles/53426-open-range-enters-into-agreement-with-level-3.htm

From Brker_guy's PR today showing national reach or "critical mass" beyond the six percent US household "rural market" penetration in (3)'s original Open Range press release in 2009 shown above.

“This partnership enables LightSquared to provide an enlarged and seamless nationwide 4G-LTE footprint to all of our retail partners and their customers, and is part of LightSquared’s planned commercial service which will result in billions of dollars of investment, offer consumers a new wireless competitor and create tens of thousands of jobs across America,” said Sanjiv Ahuja, chairman and chief executive officer of LightSquared.

Netflix to the Titans with their broadband network partner at their side: You're a "House of Cards."

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Netflix-Begins-Its-Assault-On-siliconalley-4156536124.html?x=0&.v=2

So a few years after shutting down its Red Envelope business that invested in indie films, the company is reportedly getting back into original programming -- via a huge investment in a series directed by David Fincher and starring Kevin Spacey.

Deadline Hollywood reports that Netflix has outbid several networks, including HBO and AMC, for the series, "House of Cards." The deal could be worth $100 million or more.

If true, that's a big bet on a single series -- something Netflix hasn't really done at all, focusing instead on older, cheaper content to stream from the major networks.

Interesting press release and article about video streaming.  According to this company, NPD, which I don't know much about, Netflix has about 60% of the legit streamed movie market.

No comment on what Netflix's share of the market will be like going forward, but it's just another interesting indication of the shift in video delivery.
