Guest ValueCarl
An expanded agreement with Sony for CDN services with the necessary security blocks, would be welcomed news for the owners of "The Network Partner You Can Rely On." http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Sony-begins-partial-apf-1505556628.html?x=0&sec=topStories&pos=main&asset=&ccode= Kazuho Hirai, chief of Sony Corp.'s PlayStation video game unit, said in a statement that the company has beefed up security measures to protect customers' personal data. While the partial service allows users to enjoy video games and online chat, Sony said consumers still cannot buy video games or other content by using credit cards. "While we understand the importance of getting our services back online, we did not rush to do so at the expense of extensively and aggressively testing our enhanced security measures," Hirai said. Among the 100 million user accounts, Sony said about 92 million can access the limited PlayStation network service. The network serves both the PlayStation video game machines and Sony's Qriocity movie and music services. It is a system that also allows users to upgrade and download games and other content. Sony spokesman Sosuke Kamei said the company's probe into the hacker attack was ongoing. He declined to give details on the investigation.
brker_guy
carl, I sure hope that the Sony guys are talking to (3). I heard on the radio yesterday that Sony has this network back up in limited region (North America and Europe). Geez, I wonder who operate in those two regions... ;D

Guest ValueCarl
Google takes on nearly half of (3)'s aggregate debt in one fell swoop. It's dirt cheap money we can only wish for considering our plight. (AP) -- Google Inc. added to its cash hoard Monday by issuing $3 billion in corporate debt at low interest rates. It's the first time Google has tapped the corporate bond market for money. After paying its expenses, Google expects to get about $2.97 billion in proceeds. Management intends to use some of the money to repay short-term debt, and the rest for yet-to-be determined purposes. As of March 31, Google listed $3.2 billion in short-term debt, which consisted mostly of commercial paper. The Internet search leader sold the notes in three-, five- and 10-year pieces: $1 billion carrying an interest rate of 1.25 percent and coming due in 2014; $1 billion at an interest rate of 2.125 percent and a 2016 maturity; and $1 billion at an interest rate of 3.625 percent that comes due in 2021. brker_guy
Look what we got here, folks. These FOOL.BOMBs have been bashing LVLT ad nauseam by putting one negative article after the next about LVLT, and I thought they must really hate LVLT. Instead, their management went out and invested in LVLT, at the same time had been increasing their investment. There is a word for this kind of behavior. Guest ValueCarl
So far, it has been fourteen years since Netflix's vision of ubiquitous video in the U.S. minimally. Fourteen years later and the last mile incumbents, these monopolists, are up to their same old dirty tricks, i.e., delay, delay, delay. How much longer do think the TECH WORLD is going to tolerate this without out rolling out a disruptive solution which acts as a work around once and for all? I saw that article. The irony of that is that Centurylink bought Embarq, which I believe used to be the local wireline division of Sprint! How ridiculous would it be if Sprint were forced to combine again into a landline/wireless play? As I said before, Goldman's switching from Clearwire to Sprint indicates that something very interesting is going to happen in the next year or two. Perhaps a Sprint buyout/recap is in the works. brker_guy
Tx, I agree with you there about a buyout/recap will take place with S. The MSO guys are not going to take this sitting down though. They know that the users are going to be untethered, and the more they stay connected to their brand(i.e. Comcast, Cox or CableVision), the better. So, I think there is a story for CLWR there that is yet to be written. I don't think the MSO and Google will take this lying down and let AT&T, VZ, and CTL/S rule their universe. In any event, I see that GS increased their S position by 8% last quarter...
Cardboard
And, here is another one to add or to confirm the trend of things to come in wireless. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-05-17/verizon-sees-spectrum-shortage-pushing-industry-acquisitions.html?cmpid=yhoo Seidenberg said publicly that they did not need Sprint following the announced merger between AT&T and T-Mobile. Looks like that the COO who will replace Ivan is at least interested in a big asset controlled by Sprint or Clearwire' spectrum. Equally on the good news front, we are now equal to Verizon Wireless on customer satisfaction: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Customer-satisfaction-with-apf-3655350606.html?x=0&.v=3 And, we are likely to introduce the IPhone 4S when available while Sprint did not carry Apple products previously. http://blogs.forbes.com/ericsavitz/2011/05/13/apple-analyst-says-no-lte-in-iphone-5-to-add-sprint-t-mobile/?partner=yahootix Cardboard

Guest ValueCarl
Whoa! It looks like Mr. Scott is leading the charge on converting those 15 percent 2013 hybrid bonds into shares. Of the 222MM original shares he has converted almost ten percent or 20MM shares. However, it looks like after conversion he sold them! But to whom? :o My tin foil hat's antennas are now on HIGH ALERT!!!!!!!!!! ;D http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/794323/000122520811014664/xslF345X03/doc4.xml Update: I think I misinterpreted this originally, and the 16MM shares are still not converted nor sold, but 4MM are as far as I am deciphering. 2nd Update: I recommend this post for the finance majors seeking to understand the nuts and bolts of Walter's transaction along with the calculation beyond # of shares that is being offered by this normally sharp tool here: The interest savings for this conversion, will be in excess of $1MM per year for now. Will Mr. Watsa, etal, follow Walter's lead? http://investorvillage.com/smbd.asp?mb=444&mn=103912&pt=msg&mid=10504287 Final Update: It appears I really screwed this up and all Mr. Scott did was exploit the value of the convert by selling it at a premium to another convert buyer! No share issuance, no interest savings, and Donald Trump would fire me, and I would deserve it! :P

Guest ValueCarl
Ben Graham, I like this man Howie, and he gets HIGH MARKS from me inclusive of his MOXIE! At the same time, I am hoping in my bone of bones that, Howie Marks' "WHEN" for placing his hard earned shekels down underneath his Oak Tree's shade being cast upon "The Greatest One of Them All," is satisfactory to another great VALUE INVESTOR who is donning "The Buffett Cloth," Mr. Mohnish Pabrai. There was a day when Mohnish stared me down from 6" high, and asked the same word, "WHEN," when the name of this historically painful stock for "equity owners" came into play! ;) As you are well aware, I haven't been too damn good on the "WHEN" with this stock over a great many years, although buying it into HELL has never been a problem for me and my ilk. Looking forward to hearing from our fearless leaders at tomorrow's ASM via "the power of the internet!" ;D I wish it were going to be telecast by video; however, like it had been in earlier ASM's gone by, only to disappear notwithstanding the "VIDEO SHIFT" which is in full swing! Guest ValueCarl
Ben Graham, here is my message to Akamai owners which was censored and blocked on Yahoo Finance's message board. Re: Why Do FOOLS Fall In Love With Akamai? Do you not know what happens during full MOONS? I thought an astronomer's relative is spearheading this company? Do I have to teach your members the effects of the earth's gravitational pull between the moon and sun on its tides? CDN is in the midst of a FULL MOON where the tides provided by its players are extremely high or extremely low. It is clear that (3)'s tide is RISING very HIGH, while Akamai's is SINKING very LOW. There are many other technical factors for this phenomenon relative to owned assets vs. non owned assets where customers' boats need to float. All the boats in the water will be seeking the the one who provides the RISING, HIGHEST TIDES so they may stay afloat and look towards the CLOUDS. This is a self fulfilling, irreversible prophecy governed by "nature." It is compounded by Darwin's survival of the fittest. Guest ValueCarl
Ben Graham, this a value investor's safe haven, and you're being too shy in giving them the MUSIC VALUE they deserve. Music value that takes up more bandwidth than text that is! It's my recollection that "Bad Moon Rising" is a Creedence Clearwater Revival song. Here's something for nothing-curmudgeons are going to love it!-except a message to always be prepared for the unexpected. This should be something value investors hold dear to their hearts in hoping to build, "margins of safety" during "SHIFTS" in the earth's business weather patterns! Guest ValueCarl
Although the ASM offered a great deal of information to be gleaned about our prospects going forward, I found a casual remark by Mr. Crowe during his introduction to be most illuminating. It came in the form of a "customer mention" I haven't heard or seen on the slide presentations historically. JP Morgan, the House that Morgan Built and Jamie Dimon presides over today, is a newly minted Level 3 Communications customer. We have been experiencing Mr. Storey applying the same methods whilst leaking "new customer wins." ;)
