brker_guy
Carl, this is why Comcast is afraid and went on an attack: http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/11/29/netflix-partner-says-comcast-toll-threatens-online-video-delivery/ "A recent study found that at peak times, Netflix represented 20 percent of Internet download traffic in the United States. That makes it a de facto competitor for incumbent distributors like Comcast and Time Warner Cable, which are eager to protect both the subscription television business and the emerging video-on-demand business." brker_guy
I think this is the best editorial on Comcast that I have read today: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/timothy-karr/comcast-busted-new-tolls-_b_789786.html How does that saying go again, "Power corrupt absolute power..."? Guest ValueCarl
O.K. Brker_guy, I'll lighten up on loooonginvestor, so that he feels comfortable roaming the LVLT plain with us two wolves; wolves with ferocious appetites for sure! I was surprised to see that Google was looking to blow up $6B for an online retailer this morning! Without a doubt, (3)'s Fiber Factory is Billy Ballmer's great opportunity to ensure its long term destiny, right now! Check out toddforthree's, message #99285 on the IV board, for his take and tell me what you think. Todd often resorts to encryption, but this is one of his more coherent posts where, dare I say, he's not hiding anything? ;D Your point on Hulu/LLNW is well taken. Guest ValueCarl
Global Crossing's statement is further confirmation of toddforthree's peering scenario being played out. I'm surprised their stock price is holding up so well! We are "the IP leader" from which our fearless leader, James Q. Crowe, has always stated unabashedly in the public domain! Without "Big (3)," there is no internet! Billy Ballmer knows this while our stock price tied to their "silly voting machine" has ignored it for way too long now! imo http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Global-Crossing-Statement-to-prnews-3623489094.html?x=0&.v=
brker_guy
Wow! GLBC is coming to the defense of Internet Freedom? I am shocked! BTW: Did you see this? Guest ValueCarl
Is that Cramer's crew running with their criminal tails behind them, or could it be some other masked Super Heros, like Billy Ballmer or WEB? 8) For the record, it's clearly a "net neutrality" principle in violation here; however, the peering matter seems to make (3), the de facto IP network for specialized "video." We are the VVDN, Brker_guy! ;D
brker_guy
Thank you, CNBC! Even though you shall be part of the evil empire soon, we (3) shareholders are grateful to you for the free press on NFLX/LVLT deal and the LVLT/Comcast David vs. Goliath battle. ;D Thank you, sincerely! I think you might have gotten the shorts to cover on LVLT today after they read all of the press on how much internet traffic streaming video will do, and the company that will deliver it to you? Level (3), of course! ;D If fast-talking head Cramer of yours doesn't grasp the concept of IP network, now would be a good time to train him. :-) May be he extend an invite to Mr. Crowe to come on. ;D Mark your calendar, Carl. Dec. 21st is the day of reckoning for Net Neutrality ruling by the FCC. To all you Netflix account holders, I urge you to spend wonderful quality with your family this holiday seasons by cranking up that Ruku box or any Netflix-enabled streaming box you have at home and enjoy great movies. Watch or re-watch Avatar(best in 3D) or your favorite movies. STREAM AS MUCH AS YOU LIKE!!!!! We, (3) shareholders, urge you to do so! ;D Because comes, Jan. 2011, the real internet backbone will have your back on streaming. ;D Cheers!!!! Guest ValueCarl
No more "KISSES of DEATH," Brker_guy, please! (3) owners are still smarting from his 06/07 rants and Jim Crowe's "voice only" appearance on that BOBBLE HEAD's program! ;D Let's do it with "DIGNITY" this time, and ORGANIC REVENUES from "DIRECT SALES!" Where's my APPLE and AMAZON announcements!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL <If fast-talking head Cramer of yours doesn't grasp the concept of IP network, now would be a good time to train him. :-) May be he extend an invite to Mr. Crowe to come on.>
Guest ValueCarl
The internet is moving at the speed of light while we try to keep up, Brker_guy. Dan is doing a little teaching of his own tied to Comcast here: http://blog.streamingmedia.com/the_business_of_online_vi/2010/11/the-real-issue-in-the-comcast-and-level-3-dispute-.html
Guest ValueCarl
My personal plea to the FCC. I am not a Comcast nor Netflix customer at the moment; however, I see this as an affront, quite frankly an assault on America's freedom to pursue content of their choice, something that every liberty seeking individual will need in order to be able to compete as we fast forward through this age of the internet. If we are left suffering with the status quo being dictated by these legacy monopolists in the telecom and cable world, enabling them to force feed us, and "dumb us down" their bundles and packages of entertainment, news, and education, we shall not have a fighting chance versus the rest of the globe! Do NOT let this blatant act of a MONOPOLIST STAND, and DO NOT let your fellow Americans down! http://www.huffingtonpost.com/adam-green/40000-protest-comcast-att_b_789791.html
brker_guy
Wow, I read everything else I could get my hands onto day except for Mr. Rayburn's post. Excellent write up, and thanks for sharing! We were right all along, Carl. This is about "power" at the end of the day that Comcast wants to exert on us. I like the comments from Mr. Jason Herron from MSFT, (Disclaimer: I'm a MSFT employee and work in this field, etc, etc, but my remarks are my own, not my employers'.) Dan, I was with you until your very last sentence. Yes, this is about highlighting the last-mile issue, and yes, this is about LVLT taking a stand, IMHO. (No personal knowledge of the situation.) But like so many others, your last point conflates "net neutrality" with "the last-mile monopoly". You said it exactly yourself: "There is no one else that Level 3 could buy something off to get access to Comcast's eyeballs." THIS is the problem -- last-mile customers have no competitive options! Solve that problem, and this "net neutrality" debate vanishes. May be he will have a revelation and go to Mr. Balmer with the idea of doing the last mile as a business model for MSFT. Heck, if Google can tackle it or willing to burn $6BIL on Groupon, why can't Mr. Softee be as creative like the Googlers? :D Okay, I hear you about "Kisses of Death". We both have been there and done that. Not a pleasant feeling. May be just the "BOBBLE HEAD". ;D Let's do it with "DIGNITY" this time, and ORGANIC REVENUES from "DIRECT SALES!" Where's my APPLE and AMAZON announcements!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hallelujah to that! We should approach Amazon with a deal to take their money losing CDN business off their hands in return for some e-commerce traffic on (3)'s network. What do you think to that? Mr. Jobs better start thinking about that AppleTV platform of his! Mr. Roberts are on gunning for him! It's time for Mr. Jobs to consider (3) as the medium of choice for AppleTV. brker_guy
Carl, I don't know if you saw it yet, but Rob had another good post this morning about video traffic ratio: http://www.telecomramblings.com/2010/11/traffic-ratio-is-a-code-word-for-over-the-top-video/#more-9074
Guest ValueCarl
I did, and I appreciate Toddy's weighing in very much! As I have told some, ultimately, the price of "bandwidth" must be paid. However, unless plausible arguments can be made identifying specific costs to deliver and receive traffic, something our CEO has thus far attempted in vain to educate "the market" about, this move by Comcast is Schadenfreude, and should not stand. I see Julius has weighed in this morning, and VZ is already appealing to their captured "Republican Congress" where supporting "MONOPOLISTS" remain their historical status quo. Let us hope that, better business heads prevail and we get down to the factual "ECONOMICS" which must drive our "INTERNET" moving ahead. Genachowski stressed that Internet providers would have the option of managing their networks in a non-discriminatory way, including usage-based pricing. They would be expressly forbidden, however, from "unreasonable discrimination" in blocking or throttling specific types of legal data. It may also lead the FCC to take action in its investigation of the Comcast/Level 3 dispute. Although Comcast has insisted that Level 3 was simply trying to avoid typical peering relationship deals, Level 3 has alleged that the move would block video even on its usual backbone service and has framed it as a net neutrality debate. Comcast has tried to argue that it should be exempt from having to allow access to NBC video as part of its proposed merger. brker_guy
How do you know when an exec is full of it, Carl? Well, let's hear it from the guys at Comcast. Pay attention to the hands now. Very important for the hand waving. :D http://blog.comcast.com/2010/11/how-internet-peering-works.html How can you tell if a guy with no tech experience trying to be a paid blogger? Well, take a look here: http://www.digitalsociety.org/2010/11/level-3-outbid-akamai-on-netflix-by-reselling-stolen-bandwidth/ Talk about being a monopolist eh? Guest ValueCarl
Wow, Brker_guy, I think I get it now! Hey, Joe, WAZ UP with DAT! Your "CLOUD DRAWING" engineer whose "RING" could be heard clapping down on the table repeatedly in a nervous motion, just told the world that, for TEN YEARS his company has had a "RACKET" that would make Tony Soprano proud, and just because he doesn't see the GOUGING of a third party's "COMPETING VIDEO" coming onto your network; there is NO PROBLEM! In the mean time, while I look at the unrecognized value in the form of "REVENUES" between your company and (3), by example, relative to them literally MOVING TRAFFIC X the GLOBE for "worldly citizens" to benefit by compared to your "SMALL TERRITORY," albeit, large in the scheme of the US population today, I want to VOMIT on the table he was banging his ring on!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did you hear that JOE! And, I'm NOT kidding! >:(
brker_guy
My favorite part is when they gave the banking example of data exchange. Uh JOE, this is NOT about data exchange and banking; this is about video streaming that your network can't keep up with and about locking customers in from choices!! I didn't realize how dirty these guys at Comcast are until now. http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2010/04/27/comcast-shouldnt-ignore-this-slap-in-the-face.aspx http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2010/11/18/i-hate-you-comcast.aspx I hate to be giving kudos to the guys at the Fool, but they do deserve these kudos for calling it right! Guest Bronco
I haven't clicked on all the links here but paying Comcast for subscriber fees where I am is money well spent. Parsad
You can't put a price tag on watching my Flyers kick the crap out of lesser teams (i.e. Canucks). You're just looking for a fight Bronco! ;D We'll be in the finals this year, but I'm guessing Pittsburgh is going to knock you guys out. Can you believe that? Sidney Crosby is going to beat up the "Broadstreet Bullies"! Cheers!
txlaw
For people who are wondering what the heck ValueCarl and brker_guy are talking about, here's a pretty lucid article that describes the Level 3 vs. Comcast fight. http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2010/11/how-comcast-became-a-toll-collecting-hydra-with-a-nuke.ars/
Guest Bronco
Parsad - Pittsburg always gives us fits. One year we will beat them. Crosby is my most hated player in hockey. Probably the best player not from Washington/Russia, but I hate diving/whining/donkey punching (see you tube). I have 10x more respect for Ovy b/c he may be one of the best forecheckers in the league + his shot is insane. Washington is the best regular season team that I have witnessed in a long time (reminds me of the Colorado team with Forsberg / Sakic - just awesome). All joking aside, I hope Vancouver makes it to the finals this year. A lot of talent that just needs to put it together come playoff time. And I hope they play the good guys from Broad Street and Pattison.
Parsad
This is our 40th Anniversary and no cup yet. So we hope this is the year! It's starting to come together. We have the best powerplay in the league, and the 4th best penalty-kill. Consistency is a bit of a problem 5-on-5, but things seem to be improving. A long season ahead still, so barring injuries, we should make a really good run this year. Cheers!
brker_guy
Sanjeev, there are those who actually enjoy masochism. We certainly don't qualify. ;D Come June, everything will be settled. Bronco, I am happy for you that you are a content Comcast sub. I hope you have a Netflix account too like Reed Hundt, former FCC chief, and you stream A LOT of movies from you Comcast account comes January. The more the better! ;D Carl, I read that same thread this morning as well. Lots of conjecture, but considering Comcast's ambitions, I wouldn't doubt it. These days, I don't take anything that Comcast does for granted now. I need to learn to invert a little more. :D BTW: Looks like the shorts have used the end of the money to cover eh? volume pretty much dried up today. Guest ValueCarl
Oh brother, Brker_guy, forgetting sports, there's a hidden message for (3) owners here, for sure! Beat me, and beat me some more, sir, please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D I hope you're right about your volume watch tied to money supply, because that's not something I have a strong handle on, unfortunately. <Sanjeev, there are those who actually enjoy masochism. brker_guy
LOL! I forgot, I am one of those masochists for being a holder (3). ;D Seems like being a masochist does have its reward. :D May be one day, it will us a lot more pleasure. ;D I don't have a good handle on the money supply either. It was just me speculating. That petition site is about to hit 100K petitioners. Not bad!
