redhots
Here is a Paulson Institute case study on BYD. It has a nice history of the company with some details that I haven't seen before. Munger_Disciple
It is clear from the report that some of BYD's wounds were self-inflicted, but I also think the report shows that the US especially in states like California has become anti-business and uncompetitive with the rest of the world in terms of opening new factories. brker_guy
Very nice case study paper. Thanks for sharing the link, redhots! BTW: Munger_Disciple, truer words could not have been better said.... Jurgis
It is clear from the report that some of BYD's wounds were self-inflicted, but I also think the report shows that the US especially in states like California has become anti-business and uncompetitive with the rest of the world in terms of opening new factories. Let me see: so the fact that California provided incentives and tried to attract BYD is now considered as "anti-business" and uncompetitive. Boggles the mind. What are you going to consider "pro-business" and competitive? Allowing BYD to pay $1.5 per hour to workers in yuan?
Munger_Disciple
Thanks for the nice words brker_guy. Here is an article about CA (and NY): http://www.inc.com/maeghan-ouimet/california-and-new-york-not-business-friendly.html Quote from then Intel CEO (Intel's world-wide HQ by the way is in CA): "We're so close to screwing it up, it's pathetic..." Aurelius
As of today Byd has a market cap of 88.39B HKD or $11,36B USD. Last years earnings in todays (depreciated) currency were $66M, resulting in a P/E = 172. Back in October 2015 the company forecasted a 435%-481% profit increase as oppose 2014. Since then they have revised their profit forecast upward to a 518%-557% increase. That is a profit of 2,68-2,850B Yuan, which translates to $410-430 million USD. Byd is thus selling at TTM P/E = 26,4-27,7. ”During the fourth quarter of 2015, the domestic new energy vehicles industry experienced explosive growth, which also moved the Group’s electric vehicles segment into undersupply. Although the Company’s new energy vehicles production is running at full capacity, it still cannot meet the enormous demand of the new energy vehicles market.” http://www.hkexnews.hk/listedco/listconews/SEHK/2016/0107/LTN201601071305.pdf Interview with Wang Chuanfu: http://evobsession.com/interview-with/ Wang Chuanfu expects to double electric car sales every year for the next 3 years. From 60.000 in 2015 to 480.000 in 2018. Longtime investor Li Lu increased his stake in BYD slightly (3,4%) last year when the price fell substantially. During these last weeks/months Li Lu added an additional 31% to his stake (for prices that are higher then Byd is selling for at the moment). http://sdinotice.hkex.com.hk/di/NSForm2.aspx?fn=290999&lang=EN&dia=Y Seems like Byd is finally starting to gain traction with their electric vehicles. Pretty interesting.
redhots
BYD won a proposal to create battery-electric drayage trucks for California Ports. (T9) http://insideevs.com/california-to-award-23-6-million-for-zero-emission-trucks-at-seaports/ I like that BYD is expanding into more vehicles and actually winning work in the US. All of the data for the trucks will be available to partners. The trucks will be used alongside diesel trucks by the same operators. This project will also prove that the long-term economics of the vehicles are sound. (higher upfront with monthly savings). Lastly, the T9 platform uses the same cab, chassis, and powertrain for other trucks... so will hopefully open up those markets as well. (regional food, beverage, goods delivery, refuse trucks, and concrete mixers) This is a good first step to open up the market for these kinds of vehicles. I found the proposal on the www.arb.ca.gov site. (see attached) Here are some interesting points. The proposal was for 20 trucks (but flexible).. not sure how many they won They are the first OEM that will manufacture every major electric propulsion component They are doing a better job highlighting the benefits of the iron phosphate battery They are integrating with I/O controls for the monitoring system Trucks will cost $300,000 Chargers will cost $2,500 (40kW) to $30,000 (200kW) They estimate $13,700 in annual savings vs. diesel yard trucks It takes 6 months for BYD to deliver (they took 6 months for 20 street sweeping vehicles in Beijing) Companies like Coca-Cola, Sysco, and UPS have already expressed interest in electric Class 8 trucks for regional deliveries If BYD is able to meet its sales and production targets.... price will reduce from $300,000 to $150,000 in 5 years! I just noticed a new T9 fact sheet with some upgrades. https://www.dropbox.com/s/os1ya5lhvzpqpmg/BYD_T9%20Battery%20Electric%20Class%208%20Truck.pdf?dl=0 86 mile range is now 100+ 2 feet shorter and 1 foot wider top speed from 56mph to 60 charging time from 3.5 hrs to 2.5 sfpp-016.pdf
