Smazz
looks like the mrkt does not agree with you.... Both Buffett and Graham would tell you not to use Mr. Market as a guide... I would think you could see my post to him were sarcastic - Im using his words to answer him. If you read most of my posts in the last little while i write the "market" makes no sense. He only comes in here to spout vague nonsense so i just gave him vague non sense back.
Smazz
Well, I'll quote a REAL LIVE PERSON - Director of RIM leaving the company but not slagging the company! http://crackberry.com/exclusive-interview-mike-kirkup-sr-director-developer-relations-why-he-leaving-research-motion This is a great company with leaders who I admire and respect. I know that RIM and BlackBerry will always be at forefront of wireless communications and I only expect great things from this company. Q. Have you lost faith in RIM? A. No. I cannot stress this enough. I have so much admiration and respect for the people at RIM. I love BlackBerry. My smartphone, my PlayBook, they are great products and I know RIM is going to keep offering excellent products for everyone who wants to be able to live on the go. Liberty
Q. Why are you leaving? Why now? A. The wireless and technology sectors are changing so rapidly right now and this is a very good time for me to step back, spend some time with my family and re-prioritize a bit. It's also the right time for me to decide what my next journey will be. The journey so far, with RIM, has been incredible. This is a great company with leaders who I admire and respect. I know that RIM and BlackBerry will always be at forefront of wireless communications and I only expect great things from this company. If you believe this is the real reason, I have a bridge to sell you!

Uccmal
I spent some time checking consumer reviews on the new RIMM phones last night - following my investment. Many from the UK to give a non-Canadian flavour to my research. The reviews generally extremely good. For Apps developers, the QNX operating system coming early next year on the phones is apparently able to use any apps developed for the existing RIMM ecosystem. Add to this the Android applications and this becomes a non issue. People, in their reviews invariably compare the BB to the Iphone and HTC phones. The BB do not appear to come up wanting in any way. In fact there is a whole set of people who prefer the solid keyboards to the pop up. One BB unit has both. These buggers are loyal. Just a sidenote that probably explains the stock rise. turar
Just saw this on my Facebook news feed from one of my friends: "Blackberry Bold 9900 with OS7 is awesome! The keyboard is simply sublime. What a difference from OS5 and the Curve 8520!"

S2S
Gross margin guidance continues to be lowered... And I'm still waiting for a credible responses to an argument I made months ago: What's more (and I have made this same argument before in this forum, too), RIM takes home ~40% of sales as gross margin vs. ~20% of other handset makers. Why? BIS/BES. Now, flip it around and put on the thinking hat of a corporate decision maker. These services are NOT free. When your userbase is no longer dominated by BBs, why would you NOT shop around for mobile security solutions (such as http://bit.ly/oKnpXx) or, even in the case of large multinationals, do it in house? Oh, and by the way the RIM earns significantly lower margin (as a % of sales) on the Playbook than traditional BBs. Sales growth (especially in international markets, where customer behavior will eventually catch up with the early smartphone markets such as the US and prefer more internet-browsing-friendly phones) will also decelerate. 1 + 1 + 1 = 3, please enlighten me how RIMM margin will NOT go down? Uccmal
Peter Burke. I looked through your past posts - the past 50 or so anyway. Just a stream of meaningless one liners. Go do some real research on something and share something of real value with us or is it all just vague irritating noise. RIMM Q end was August 31st. New phones were released on Aug. 15th. 15-16 days. They are still being rolled out in most countries. Have a look a their press releases. While your at it check out some customer reviews on their products. I can respect S2S's questions - some real work was done.

CONeal
After just finishing the call I am actually looking forward to the next couple of qtrs. I think everyone who follows the company knew this was going to be a crappy qtr as they switched to BB7. Couple of things that stood out. 200k Playbooks shipped and they addressed it. Playbook 2.0 coming out in time for the holidays (email, calander, etc) R&D will be around 13% in the coming qtrs Sounded like QNX phone news will come out at Dev Con Cost optimization continues in the 3rd qtr Phones have higher margins. Playbook is being subsidised for the rest of the year for promitions will work against the margins Didn't buyback shares last qtr (probably due to the money spent on the patents) There are some new products coming out that hasn't been announced yet. Overall it looks like things are starting to fall in place for a big holiday push. Will read the transcript when it comes out. This is just what jumped out at me. Uccmal
Thanks CO, I know they are working on Automotive interaces of all sorts. This works well in Ontario where they can work directly with high tech Tier 1 suppliers, that they know, at the leading edge. There is also Near Field Communications which is nearly ready to roll with Assa Abbloy.

BeerBaron 1. analyst asked about the patents but there is not much they can discuss about it right now. RIM is covered under all the patents. 2. No, they are not phasing out the tablets. Since they can be updated they are waiting for one big update and basically relaunching for the holidays. They will be subsidized. Sounded like they will be making an aggressive push for marketing them once 2.0 is ready. Should be shortly after DevConn 3. Would not discuss QNX phone. Doesn't want to riun some of the things they have planned for DevCon in Oct. They did mention the QNX developers phones are complete and working

Uccmal
Well I dont know given2invest, I have a BB that I am okay with, and an Ipad I love. I just know that many BB users are very true to their devices. I ask people all the time. Those who use I-phones rave about them, and those who use BBs rave about them. No ever seems to rave about their Samsung, Motorola or HTC phone. I have a Samsung dumb phone for work and it is terrible, but that is based on a sample size of 1. Put another way... I am only in it for the money. I deliberately looked at overseas and US user reviews (not pro testers)- UK/US mostly - to avoid further hometown bias. S2S
Do people like RIMM more because it's a large canadian company and this is a canadian board? Just curious. You know, I think I've made that point myself in one of the gazillion RIMM threads floating around. Useless anecdote: I was reading a today WSJ article about, of all things, the Toronto movie festival when I came across this nugget: "Since Research in Motion a Canadian brand, BlackBerry was pretty much ubiquitous." (Source: http://on.wsj.com/pRaIdP). This could only happen in Canada; anywhere else in the world, the movie festival crowd and BBs are mutually exclusive. Full disclosure: I am a long-time BB user. Though I am seriously considering switching to either the Samsung 4G Touch or the Sprint iPhone 5 in a month or so.
Fairfaxnut
PB deals are already getting hot.... I bought one for myself through a Telus employee. $299 employee pricing on the 16GB model, and RIM has the $100 mail in rebate.....$199 final excluding taxes. Can't wait for ver 2.0 which will solve a lot of complaints about lack of apps. There will be a Android emulator called "Android Player" that will allow the PB to use Android apps, which will be a huge plus. Margins will suck, but I'm hoping they will get the developer community interested with the new SDK and build over time. QNX will be key as it's the only kernal based OS on the market.....offers awesome stability, performance, and security.
CONeal
Do people like RIMM more because it's a large canadian company and this is a canadian board? Just curious. I'm in the U.S and in it strictly for a turnaround play. The media here in the states can be very relentless when a company is in transition. The media does not factor in what happens in the rest of the world, just pick the damaging headline and run with it since viewers will read it. I view this opportunity much like McDonalds back in 2001-2002. Does people remember that everyone was certain McDonalds was going out of business? Rim has a very dedicated user base and will pull out of the funk. Once they do, the media will start praising RIM and the good press will eventually end up in sales. Kind of like a New BlackBerry campaign. The worst enemy of RIM right now happens to be RIM itself. Their marketing and PR has never existed and when they could use it most there is nothing but silence. Apple is constantly managing their image and has been warning that phone sales would drop off a bit as they liquidate the channel getting ready for IPhone 5. BlackBerry goes through the same process and allows the media to jump on them without giving the business logic of why this needs to be done. I felt going into this that this year would be rough. It has been a little bit of a shock at how much the media has jumped on this. Based on the conference call, I think devcon is the beginning of "The New BlackBerry". Both ceo's are under the gun and if they don't execute for the holiday season, defending the co CEO jobs at the end of the year will become difficult. This year is the first time they have actively marketed to consumers. As with anytime something new is done, mistakes are made. I think they have received the message and are doing what needs to be done to right the ship. Devcon will be the first step of showing those changes. ********* Instead of tacking on another post. After going over the meeting again. Came across something I missed the first go around. They are pretty much betting on a record 4th qtr. They are already fighting for their jobs at the end of the year so something has to be going on. If they guide down later it could get real interesting. Damn I wish they were better managing expectations. Of course they might have an ace up their sleeve.
