Liberty
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424053111903918104576504490858882546.html Sprint Nextel Corp. has abandoned plans to sell a version of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet that runs on its high-speed network, citing a lack of demand from business customers. The decision is a setback to Research In Motion Ltd. and comes at a difficult time for the company, which has seen its stock price tumble nearly 60% this year as sales of its signature phones have been losing ground to competitors. Sprint's reversal means the device hasn't yet found any support from the three largest U.S. wireless carriers, which includes AT&T Inc. and Verizon Wireless. Without their backing, RIM will have to bear the burden of sales and marketing support for the device, as well as application development.

Liberty
I'm sure it's reassuring to shareholders that the PR people who came up with the RIM socks haven't been laid off ;)

Liberty, I have looked at your avatar from all sides and cannot quite figure out what it is? You should hold a contest... I am thinking it is a mouse holding a satellite dish.... Or else an up-side-down frisbee about to hit Mr. Bill, SNL for those who are too young... or else the Statue of Liberty upside-down... In keeping with your handle. I agree with the writer's view. To play along with the lighter mood of recent posts, here's a weird advertising gaffe from the folks at RIM: the new Blackberry Torch can run games! And message! And — wait — is that an Android device (HTC Incredible 2) in the video? http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/19/blackberry-sucks-at-making-fan-videos/

cwericb
Don’t know if this has been posted before, but interesting in light of recent events “...RIM, maker of the BlackBerry, may now be worth almost $25 billion, an estimate from Morgan Keegan & Co. showed.” http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-08-19/rim-rallies-100-in-sale-value-as-google-motorola-lures-samsung-real-m-a.html

The 32GB for $149 I think. Ipeople are buying them and going crazy to get them for the price yet openly admit they dont even know WTF they are buying haha.. I really dont know much about the HP tablet but what kind of service/upgrading these people expect? People are buying them for parents, wives etc without even knowing if they will use them. I guess i should have put this in the HP thread.... :-[
Rabbitisrich
Smazz, what upgrading do you need? Even if you can't eventually port Android, you still get a high quality E-Reader with good browsing capability selling for less than 40% of the Nook. They're antennas from the ALMA radio-telescope in Chile: http://www.almaobservatory.org/ Photo probably looks fake because colors have been adjusted in post-production.. Not sure. I mean, you'll be able to surf the web wifi so therefore you can do just about anything. There is a company out that is in the business of transferring all Apps to be able to be used on all systems. Cant remember the name of it though.

beerbaron
GREAT NEWS FOR RIMM LONGS - Android on Blackberry! then what is the point of developing natively for bb and what is the point of buying bb? the logical thing to do would be to buy an android phone with native apps. no emulation scheme has ever rescued a withering platform. however, it does get the institutional constituents lathered up. remember rimm rallied dozens of points on the news the playbook would run android. what would get me excited about rimm? massive insider buys. massive company buys. neither of which seem to be happening. in fact not one insider has bought shares in rimm as far as I can tell. The point to having compatibility with Android is that if you are a company and you want only the most secure softwares on your phones you can limit to BB apps. If your a teenager and want to play the latest games you have acces to them. It's a neat feature, especially when people try to value RIMM based on the apps they offer! beerbaron
The fundamentals of RIM have not changed... what's up with the run-up? I was expecting to see a run-up when new phones start really selling, not on the launch day! BeerBaron
beerbaron
IT managers being forced by the "producers" at their companies to support iphone and android. maybe rimm still has a future at the NSA. But how big a market is that? emulation schemes have always sucked. And this one will too. That is not true, Virtual Machines are currently used on servers and it's very neat. How about Apple running Windows... last time I checked it was pretty neat and compatible. Emulation is messy when the API are not well implemented. For Example, WINE that was a Linux To Windows emulator sucked, but that's not because of emulation per se, but because the coders did not know how to call the proprietary API or what exactly the API were supposed to do. When implemented correctly it works fine, albeit at the cost of extra memory and computing efficiency. BeerBaron
