Guest longinvestor
With the high trading volume in RIM, presumably a percentage is due to shorting. Back in the FFH heavy shorting days some of this was due to naked shorting. If one did naked short RIMM what are the implications of the ticker change. Is this passive or would it trigger a buyback? With Prem on the board and owning a bunch, maybe smell something? No substitute for his experience at FFH.
Aberhound
I have sold Dell to buy RIMM today after I realized that the virtualization feature of the Blackberry allowing a corporate identity separate from the personal identity carves out a niches for RIMM. I love my Iphone but using it creates a lot of security risk. My next phone will be a Blackberry. I spoke with my broker and their bank gives them all Blackberries because they require the security. They are currently evaluating the new phone and my contact expects the new phone to be issued to all in a few months with many waiting for the keyboard version. I hate Iphone predictive typing so I can't wait to get Blackberry's predictive typing. I have yet to decide on keyboard or no. I will miss the native Google apps. I also bought VMWare because they have similar virtualization technology for the Android. My bet is that competition from RIMM will cause some Android phone makers to adopt this technology. Will Iphone develop their own, use VMWare or license from RIMM? I don't know. I also like VMWare's virtual network technology. The cost of cloud computing is going to plummet as thousands of techies are replaced with a few and far less boxes are needed at each server farm. If we think Mobile Computing has taken off just wait till this new wave of innovations hit along with the new h265 video standard. I am getting bullish for the economy in general as a wave of deflation and efficiency will hit many sectors. Unfortunately the rich will get richer and more will be unemployed so maybe most of us will end up being highly paid servants. I already feel like one. Guest wellmont
i read a very good short thesis on vmware. and of course there is a very good short thesis for rimm. and why is it that as the market goes up people are more convinced than ever of "American exceptionalism"? :) this board is becoming a "happy" place, unlike in March 2009 when it should have been a happy place. Smazz
I hate Iphone predictive typing so I can't wait to get Blackberry's predictive typing. I have yet to decide on keyboard or no. I will miss the native Google apps. this is my $0.02CAD only but if you are used to qwerty, and like it, I would stay with Qwerty - The Q10. The screen will be big enough and you wont lose much. I really love the tablet. If I didnt already have one and wasnt paying for the phone I would def get the Q while getting a tablet still cheap while you can. As great as tablets and touch screens are, if you really want to fly when you are doing things (and impatient like me) you want a true keyboard. No brainer that OS10 will be thrown over to PB since they are both QNX they will work great together. Forgot to mention, yea, the predictive typing that the QNX based model brings is awesome. You will love it - wonder how it will be with a Qwerty but in my opinion will be even better because (and I have big hands) sometimes if the word is in the middle you really have to stretch (on the tablet). Guest valueInv
This is how tech companies play the marketing game: http://www.businessinsider.com/blackberry-10-app-selection-2013-2 Operator interest is likely to be exaggerated also.

I dont know why there are still sticking with dual-core snapdragon s4 processor. May be there is an issue with quad-core? The screen size is also 4.2". Interesting developments. CONeal
Just a heads up. The blackberry super bowl commercial will happen during the 3rd qtr. Think it's suppose to be near the beginning of the 3rd.

Guest valueInv
This is perhaps the biggest risk in RIMM and I've never seen value investors talk about it: http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/02/03/blackberry-asia-idUSL4N0B304P20130203 They are going after a customer base that it different than their current one. The new devices don't address the Android threat in some of their biggest markets.

Interesting developments. those phones are mid range and low end. the M7 is the HTC high end and will have a 4 core processor, and a bigger screen than z10. This is what we discussed a few days ago. the BB high end phone has the same specs as Android low and mid range phones. many of those low and mid range Android and Windows phones will be free in USA on contract. DCG
I think it's funny that I logged onto Facebook last night and noticed that Blackberry was paying for a FB sponsored story ad asking people what they thought about the ad (their FB page can be viewed here http://www.facebook.com/BlackBerryNA?fref=ts - and look at their post 'Did you just see our commercial during the big game?'). The post has over 2,000 replies, and nearly all of them seem to be people trashing the add and basically ripping on how awful Blackberry is. txlaw
Ugh, yeah, I'll admit that commercial was pretty lame. I actually was a little worried because there was actually negative press about the ad before it was even aired. But I suppose it got the job done in the sense that Americans who do not follow the tech or business press are now at least aware that Blackberry has released a new phone. I would expect the marketing blitz to come in the US to be more descriptive.
constructive
In Blackberry's defense, Samsung's ad was terrible too. If I bought mobile devices primarily based on advertising (not specs, reviews, in-store, etc.), it would be Apple all the way. I really wouldn't consider any other devices, that's how much better I think Apple's advertising is than their competitors.

Guest wellmont
Jon Erlichman made a crazy good point on bloomberg. if you have any kind of backup plan to be a generic network "services company" for the greater wireless services market, why would you change your name to "blackberry," which is the name of your phone? :)

According to CIBC analyst, 50% of Canadians who preregistered/ordered(??) were Android and iOS users. I am assuming we need to wait for more than a month to get such information. EdWatchesBoxing
I know I said I was done with this thread, but I had to post this. http://www.nfl.com/superbowl/47/commercials#video=0ap2000000134645 The BlackBerry ad is ranked #1 on the NFL website. I had mixed feelings about it. Leaning towards WTF. I guess some people really liked it.
constructive
Wow, that's crazy in my opinion. If people liked it that much, I guess BBRY climbing 15% today makes a little bit of sense. Best Buy definitely had my favorite ad. But it had nothing to do with the company, I just like Amy Poehler.
