A negative take on ALS's investment subsidiary 2260761 Ontario Inc:

http://boilerknight.blogspot.ca/

I don't agree with the main message expressed on this site - sure the investements of 2260761 are 20% down, but that is to be expected given its investment in junior miners and it could change real fast. However, I agree that it would be nice to get more comprehensive disclosure from ALS on its full list of investments through 2260761.

As an aside, a while back I took a look at the companies that I could find that 2260761 had invested in (via google searches). As a result of this I made a small investment in Kobex Inc (2260761 owns 9% and paul van eeden is on the board). It is basically a cash shell with cash of 0.74 cents per share, trading at 0.54 cents (ie a 27% discount to cash). It has recently turned itself into a junior mining invesment company. If you want to invest in junior miners and feel that van eeden has more of an inside track than you do, Kobex Inc might be worth a look.

Kobex looks interesting.  And I do agree with you in that the Boiler Knight article really missed the mark.

I think that Altius should keep its investments a secret if it can, in the same way that Buffett tries to keep his trades a secret.

My best guess is the supreme court ruling on the first nation's rights to land title. And need for consent... I wonder if this could affect the mine development...

I had a largish position in ADV but after carefully looking at all my holdings I've decided to get out at a break even... AVG down helped.  I still hold a small amount of ALs.  I just don't have the ability to evaluate this and therefore I decided they were outside of my circle of competence...

Good luck to all and thx for your help! Especially SD and Cwericb.

Great write-up of Kobex on your blog ItsAValueTrap. Regarding your view on ALS keeping its investments secret, I understand your point, but respectfully disagree. I would happily give up the benefits that management feel they get from hiding their investments for the benefit of me knowing what I have invested in.

Alderon Completes Required Engineering to Commence Construction

In light of the required pre-construction engineering being complete, Alderon has temporarily suspended any further work by its Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management ("EPCM") contractor, WorleyParsons Canada Services Ltd. ("WorleyParsons"). The internal Kami LP project team will take over management of all works in progress and continue advancing the Kami Project in preparation for the start of construction once the Company's financing plan is completed. The Company continues to advance all of the elements of its financing plan, including debt, equity and additional off-take arrangements.

To me... this press release says that they suspended further engineering work on the project.

And what’s wrong with that? It’s financing they must work on and define now. Until financing is not done, I don’t want to see further costs to pay engineering consultants.

Previously, Alderon went all-in on Kami.  It bought certain long lead-time equipment without financing in hand.

Now it is conserving cash, which may be because there is great uncertainty as to whether or not Kami will be financed and built.

2- I'd be curious as to what their contract with WorleyParsons is.  Kami presumably would pay some type of cancellation penalty???

Just a little biased ...

In light of the required pre-construction engineering being complete, Alderon has temporarily suspended any further work by its Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management ("EPCM") contractor, WorleyParsons Canada Services Ltd. ("WorleyParsons").

... WPCS has done what they were hired to do. Apparently, you would like to pay them to just hang around?

The internal Kami LP project team will take over management of all works in progress and continue advancing the Kami Project in preparation for the start of construction once the Company's financing plan is completed.

... Nothing unusual here. The Kami LP is NOT Alderon. WPCS may well be part of the ongoing engineering team, but they will be hired directly by Kami LP, & only once the project financing has been approved. "We have the in-house experience and expertise to continue with the next steps, but expect WorleyParsons (WPCS) to resume its role as the EPCM contractor for the Kami Project once a decision to commence construction is reached."

The Company continues to advance all of the elements of its financing plan, including debt, equity and additional off-take arrangements

.... Omitting what is not convenient ?

Most folks would surmise that Kami LP has been green lighted,

& that financing announcements are now near at hand.

Apparently the 200M (cash + commitments) contributed by Hebei for 25% of Kami LP is not financing ?

The significant & material amount of restricted cash (after paying all Kami LP commitments) on the Alderon BS, is also just smoke ?
