If that is the case, why the code words, why not just say so?

I don't know, but I think it's easier to learn to parse it than to try to change how everybody speaks/thinks. That's how I see it anyway :)

Yeah, I guess.  I makes me cringe every time though. It's like saying don't pay any attention to what I say when you know what I mean. How can you criticize someone with a "White Pride" bumper sticker on their pickup when "Black Pride" or "Gay Pride" is perfectly fine?

Anyway back to Apple.  This may be the first shot against the CurrentC exclusivity agreement. It won't be long before others either follow or drop out of CurrentC all together.

Interview with Trent Reznor, who was at Beats and now is working for Apple. Some interesting tidbits buried in there:

http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/6304122/trent-reznor-talks-nine-inch-nails-scoring-gone-girl-apple-project?utm_source=twitter

Reznor was chief creative officer of the Beats Music streaming service, and when he returned home to Los Angeles, Apple was interested in tapping his creative energy.

"That's flattering, as a life-long Apple consumer and fan and advocate," says Reznor, who studied computer engineering during his three semesters in college and has long wrestled with the difficulties of music in the digital age. [...] "I am on the side of streaming music, and I think the right streaming service could solve everybody's problems," says Reznor, who along with Ross will participate in a keynote Q&A at the Billboard/Hollywood Reporter Film & TV Music Conference being held at Universal City's Globe Theater on Nov. 5. "Ownership is waning. Everybody is comfortable with the cloud -- your documents, who knows where they are? They are there when you need them. That idea that I've got my records on the shelf doesn't feel as important even to me as it used to. I just think we haven't quite hit the right formula yet." [...]

You're working with Apple. Is this an evolution of your Beats role?

It's related to that. Beats was bought by Apple, and they expressed direct interest in me designing some products with them. I can't go into details, but I feel like I'm in a unique position where I could be of benefit to them. That does mean some compromises in terms of how much brain power goes toward music and creating. This is very creative work that's not directly making music, but it's around music.

Is it about music delivery?

It's in that world. It's exciting to me, and I think it could have a big enough impact that it's worth the effort. I'm fully in it right now, and it's challenging, and it's unfamiliar and it's kind of everything I asked for -- and the bad thing is it's everything I asked for.

After Dr.Dre, we now have Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails working for Apple! Wow, I couldn't have predicted that a few years ago.

Tim Cook is apparently a danger to Russian children and families.

"In accordance with a controversial law meant to curb gay "propaganda," ZEFS took down the statue "to abide to the Russian federal law protecting children from information promoting denial of traditional family values."

Just received my new iPad Air 2. So impressive what they did in just one year. Weight and thinness might not make for unexpected sexy headlines, but it makes a huge real-world difference. Great screen too, the A8X is a monster, and love having TouchID there.

I've gone to a couple stores to check it out, but they still had the older air on display (Best Buy claimed the one on display was the 2, but it didn't have a gap-less screen so I'm assuming it was the 1).

I have an iPad 3 that my daughter has largely taken over (although I still use it on occasion) and an iPad mini retina. I feel like the mini is better for reading books, but not as good for other things, while the 3 is going for web browsing, etc, but not great for reading books.

Have been thinking about selling the mini and getting the Air 2, but worry that I'll miss the smaller device for reading (and not sure I need an air along with the iPad3).

My first one was a 3, so I know what you mean. Now seems like a brick to me (I gave it to my parents). The Air 2 is so much lighter and thinner, with the smaller bezel like the Mini, it's not in the same league to read on, IMO. I thought that Air 1 was light, but this is something else. I suggest you give it a try if you can.

The doubling of RAM compared to all other iOS devices also makes it better if you have lots of tabs open and juggle big PDFs and such.

Just checked out the Air 2 in a store. I was under the impression it had the same type of gapless screen as the iPhone 6, but the one I looked at didn't appear that way.

I don't have the 6 yet, but can't get over how amazing that screen is.

I think they do (unless I'm misunderstanding what you mean).

"Not just a thinner display.

A better display.

The displays on previous generations of iPad used three separate components. iPad Air 2 changes all that, combining those three layers into just one. This eliminates gaps between layers, along with the internal reflectance caused by those gaps. The result? Colors are richer, contrast is greater, and images are sharper and more vivid."

hmm..I wonder if the black border around the screen is just more noticeable on the silver & gold iPads (which I looked at) than the space grey. On the iPhone 6's I've checked out, it feels like you're actually touching the pixels (not sure if the more rounded edges of the iPhone 6 adds to this perception), where I still felt like there was a small gap in the Air 2 I looked at.

The biggest complaint about the Air 2 seems to be with it vibrating while playing sound, which I also noticed when playing with one in the store. How much have you noticed that?

It's noticeable when the volume is fairly loud and what's playing is bassy. You can kind of feel is through your hands. At some point it's physics, though. When something is this thin, either you make it sound as thin as it is, or you give it some bass but you'll feel it.

It doesn't really bother me. Most of what I listen out loud is a quick video of an interview or whatever, and with just people talking it doesn't vibrate. If I want good sound quality to watch a movie or a concert or whatever, I'll use headphones.

iOS doing well in the enterprise. IBM salesforce and apps+cloud can only help over time.

Thanks for posting article. Doesn't surprise me - as enterprise IT is most interested in security and

bulletproof support, as opposed to price. I've no doubt IBM will help them penetrate large enterprise IT.

Apple seems to be developing a nice relationship with China UnionPay, as well as with AliPay:

http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2014/11/16/apple-adds-chinese-payment-system-unionpay-to-app-store/

The UnionPay partnership could potentially open the door for Apple Pay in China, if Apple can strike agreements with popular retailers and overcome technical and regulatory hurdles. Another route for Apple is a possible alliance with Alibaba, China’s largest e-commerce company, whose payment affiliate Alipay is the country’s largest mobile payment processor.

Alibaba Executive Chairman Jack Ma said last month that the company would be interested in partnering with Apple in payments. Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook had said he would meet with Ma, without specifying the type of partnerships they would discuss.

A possible scenario is for Alibaba’s financial affiliate to provide back-end services for Apple’s Apple Pay payment system, Alibaba Executive Vice Chairman Joe Tsai said in an interview earlier this month. That could entail iPhone users in China paying for goods with Apple Pay using money from their Alipay accounts, he said.

Watchkit is out:

https://developer.apple.com/library/prerelease/ios/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/WatchHumanInterfaceGuidelines/index.html

Of course, they're keeping a lot of things under wrap (ie. fully native apps) until it launches and they truly show the software, but it gives a good idea of some of the capabilities.

Update: Also, some nice usage stats on iOS vs Android: http://techcrunch.com/2014/11/18/ios-app-launches-nearly-double-that-of-android-apps-used-for-twice-as-long/

Thanks to the person who sent this to me on twitter.
