I love how you guys have so much personal attachment/abhorrence for this company the way people have towards sports teams. Not just you, the arguments between Apple and Android fanboys remind me of Tea Party v Liberals slugfests.

Oh jeeze, don't get me started on sports fans...

Can we add sport teams and tech co's with market caps over $X00 bln to the list of things to avoid talking about at the office?

It's not the company, it's the confidence that seems to accompany ignorance that I find abhorrent.

you can either let yourself get in a wrestling match with a pig or save yourself the time and move on. the behavior you mention is endemic to the vast majority of investors.

We don't really have to have these almost toxic tech threads, perhaps we could just stick with analysis and ignore everything that isn't?

The Bloomberg article has a few interesting comments:

1.) lack of new breakthrough products? The ipad mini was just launched just last fall. It has been sold out since then. It will break records for units sold in the coming year and its profitability is crazy high. The tablet market will see crazy growth the next few years. Regarding 2013, Apple does not communicated new product launches; the market currently is very pessimistic and essentially expects minimal innovation from Apple.

2.) slowing sales of iphone? During Q4 both the iphone 5 and 4S were out of stock for long periods... demand continues to outstrip supply.

I am not suggesting Apple is perfect; I do find it interesting how negative the media is interpreting the data points. The good news is this negative sentiment provided a great buying opportunity for investors when the stock fell below $450. I look forward to the next 9 months to see what Apple has planned.

That seems pretty boring to me, but what do I know, maybe it will catch on as fashionable.  I'm still waiting for them to do something with TV and the other obvious one:  iGlasses.    While the Google Glasses look cool, no one can compete with Apple on that name.

Tim Cook was at the Goldman investor conference yesterday. He talks about the importance of software, hardware and services. If true, that success in the future will require companies to be able to do all three well, then Apple has a massive moat and it is getting larger by the day. Nobody does these three things as well as Apple and nobody is building out their capabilities in these three areas as aggressively as Apple. Apple is now spending $10 billion per year on investments in its business. Microsoft is just now starting down the hardware journey and they are just now opening stores; oh, and it also seems to be waking up to the importance of tablets. Samsung does not control the software and appears happy to fast adapt; I don't think it has dedicated Samsung stores. Google has Android, hardware capabilities (tablets & Motorola) and no retail stores.

It looks to me that Apple is in the early stages of executing an ambitious plan to own the high end global consumer electronics business (today: phones, tablets, computers; tomorrow: watches, TV/home, vehicles and???). Kind of almost sounds like a great James Bond movie (we all get to pick our own bad guy). Apple is playing chess right now, each year investing billions in building its capabilities. Everyone else is playing checkers and happy to play follow the leader. I think as they launch more breakthrough innovation people will come to better understand the power of the integrated approach they are implementing.

Here is one question & answer from the Goldman conference:

http://www.macrumors.com/2013/02/12/tim-cook-speaks-at-goldman-sachs-technology-conference/

How do we think about Apple's culture of innovation today?

It's never been stronger. It's so embedded in Apple...the desire to make the very best products in the world. It's in the DNA of the company, and so I feel fantastic about it. Now, if you look at some essentials for innovation, there's no formula. But some of the essentials are skills and leadership. If you look at skills, Apple is in a unique and unrivaled position...expertise in software, hardware, and services. Consumers want an elegant experience where technology floats to background and customer is at the center. The real magic happens at the intersection of software, hardware, and services, and we have the ability to innovate and create magic there.

For many year, this idea of "vertical integration" was out of favor. People thought it was kind of crazy, but we never did and we continued to build. This is something you work decades for. I think there are people trying desperately to catch up, and they're finding it very difficult to do.

to be honest, when people start extrapolate a company that does X and Y well to A, B, and C, it usually smells trouble to me. If not full blow trouble, my warning lights goes up (doesn't mean its impossible but i am skeptical).

this line:

"... vehicles and???" my red flag does up :)

man i don't want to get into this debate, but to say apple is the only one doing it is it bit overstatement

microsoft have been doing it for a long time

now you can argue who is doing it better etc. but that is different from no one else is doing "what apple is trying to do"

no doubt apple is a great company, have done things well, and are trying to do everything right.

Yes, the press and the street love to exaggerate when it comes to Apple.

On the other hand, Apple is the only company they has been able to redefine three markets successfully. Others are good at copying but none have Apple's culture and capability. Look at my innovation thread to see the level others are at.

Well it depends.  I'm guessing it will eventually integrate with everything we do...when you go running, listen to music, receive texts, receive calendar and appointment reminders, etc...all without having to pull your phone out of your pocket.  And then you can even have more radical ideas.

- Like how about sensors implanted in various areas of your home...so as you walk in, your lights automatically turn on because you are wearing your iWatch...the thermostat adjusts to your setting...the tv turns on.

- What if your refrigerator sends a list of grocery items that you need to pick up directly to your watch.

- Your car door lock opens and the engine starts as your wrist approaches the vehicle.

- Your house alarm activates and deactivates as you walk in and out...even your front door locks and opens.

- You don't carry your wallet, as many of the same purchases you could make by simply waving your iPhone, also work on your iWatch...Starbucks, McDonalds, Staples, etc.

- The watch monitors your heart rate, blood pressure, etc and keeps a log for you.

- You can receive televison programs directly on your watch screen...rerouted through Appletv.

- You no longer have to type in a password in your computer, your watch being in the vicinity opens up the laptop.

These are just some of the things my lazy, untechnological mind can come up...what do you think innovative, engineers will create?  Cheers!

Yeah, the iPhone was boring, the iPad was lame and on and on.

On Google Glasses, do we expect women to spend an hour doing their make up, hair, clothes, walk out looking perfect only to blow the whole thing by putting on glasses that make them look like a cyborg?  Yeah, that's half your market gone right there.

You phone can do most of those things, you don't need to build a watch to so that. In fact, you watch is going to be very underpowered to be able to do most of them.

Alot of people don't like carrying their phone or their wallet.  The rumor is Apple is working on a watch that will have the power to do that.  Cheers!

I am curious to see what the watch's power requirement is,  because having a watch that needs a decent amount of juice would mean you have to recharge it all the time. Which I would not be excited about.

Also curious to see if they offer ways to personalize it. I think a decent amount of watch wearers use them as a fashion accessory and would not want to wear the same watch everyone else.

Or this could just be something that you wear instead of a fitbit or nike bracelet with the added benefit of IOS integration.

Hmmm, I don't believe I ever said either of those things. I'm typing this reply on my very non-lame iPad.

When we look back in ten years I think the product that will have made the largest impact on our society will be some sort of eyewear. I expect that this market, like smartphones before it, will have many players, I'm counting on apple to actually produce something people want to be seen wearing. The possibilities with an always on screen overlay right in front of you all the time are endless.  Not to mention the arms of the glasses go over near your ears as well.  Until implants hit the market that can interface directly with the vision and hearing centers in the brain, eye glasses will be the best form factor for our connectivity devices.

Just my prediction anyway.

I would rather prefer some combination watch and/or specially some Star Strek TNG communicator pin with Apple's SIRI interface, that dial's automatically on voice command.  :P

http://cdn.slashgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/star_trek_communicator-540x411.jpg

But I already feel that such a device whatever it does may cannibalize other product lines, like what the iPhone did to the iPod's, and iPad to iMac's. If I have some iWatch/something,... for what do I need to carry around some clumpy iPhone,... only to make phone calls ?? ... I wouldn't need it. I would rather straight go for an iWatch/and or pin (for calls), and maybe some iPad mini (for surfing) outside of the home.
