bookie71
Because the Dems and Repubs aren't talking to each other, you might keep an eye out for special dividends being paid this calendar year as there is a good chance the 15% dividend tax could go away. bookie71
I hit post too soon, FRS has declared a special 9.50 dividend from the sale of the Golden Corral Cafeterias. Anyone know of others?
abcd
RLI (introduced by HarryLong to this board) declared two consecutive special dividends 2010 ($7) and 20111 ($5) and may do it again this year.
eggbriar
ARDNA, a small grocery chain has made special dividends in the past, $20 in 2004 and $25 in 2008 I think they will make a similar payment before the end of this year.
benhacker
IBKR has paid a special in the past, there have been rumors of paying one again this year and the MM division is overcapitalized and generating low ROE so it may make sense in the short term. bookie71
i forgot to mention Frich (FRS) has declared a special 9.50 dividend payable 9/15 (I believe). FNBK (First National Bank of Alaska) declared one a couple of years ago for $100.
bookie71
Received the FRS dividend in my Schwab account today but not at Ameritrade. Now I hope the stock doesn't drop 9.50 on Monday.

OracleofCarolina
This post should be "who is not paying a special dividend". One company I used to own, CTM Media, plans to pay all of 2013's dividends before the end of this year. I thought that may be a little aggressive but then I saw Seaboard plans to pay the next 4 years worth of dividends before the end of this year. compoundinglife
Mentioned in the MCF thread, but MCF is distributing a $2 special. ALX is doing $122 per share special about 27 percent of the the current per share price.

Good call eggbriar! Arden indeed paid a special towards the end of November -- $20 a share on a stock trading at around $100. Particularly pleasing for me as I own some stock ;) Any other holders out there?

ShahKhezri
Since this is becoming a big 2012 event, what do you all think will be the result? -Debt paydown (mortgage, credit card, etc), although most who benefit probably don't have as much debt. -Reinvestment in the stock market -Discretionary spending
rjstc
FACTBOX-U.S. companies announcing special, early dividends 6:38 PM ET, 12/07/2012 - Reuters Dec 7 (Reuters) - U.S. companies are rushing to boost dividends before the end of the year due to uncertainty about whether lawmakers in Washington can reach a budget deal to avoid the "fiscal cliff." The $600 billion of automatic tax increases and spending cuts scheduled for the beginning of next year could include higher rates for dividends, prompting some companies to either move up planned payments or declare special dividends. More than 50 U.S. companies have made these types of dividend announcements since Nov. 6. Among the latest, Campbell Soup Co said on Tuesday it would move up its January dividend payment to December and pay an additional dividend in December, in lieu of an April dividend. Below is a list of U.S. companies that have announced special dividends or brought dividends forward since Nov. 6. Not all companies announcing these types of dividends have been included in the list. Myth465
Personally I think this is a bad trend. I can see 1 quarter worth paid early, but to pay a div for the next 4 years is ridiculous. Why would someone buy the stock after the div?

fareastwarriors
This is kinda crazy... For the average mom/pop investor/saver, the tax rates on dividend is not going to make much of a difference since their investments are inside their 401ks/ IRAs... As someone who has prepared taxes for over 50 years, it makes a difference for a lot more folks than you might think.
