Picasso
Driver assist which can start to bridge the gap towards true autopilot/autonomous driving gives people the false impression of being an actual autopilot/autonomous solution. It isn't there and it may likely never be. So there's the extra risk from people causing accidents that otherwise would have never occurred (like that fellow in the Youtube video) because they think it's autopilot (like flying a plane). I'm not sure what a true autonomous solution is going to look like or the type of hardware that's ultimately used. If done properly I don't doubt that it will save a lot of lives while also exposing drivers to strange "fat tails." But that's probably much better than what exists today. I just get annoyed when the Tesla software rollout has only been out for a day, and people are already doing really dumb things with it. There's someone on the TMC forum asking if hanging a rock from the wheel will fool the system into thinking you're in control when autopilot disengages. Freaking ridiculous. Like the quote goes, the more I know about people, the better I like my dog.

Personally, I've almost smashed into traffic ahead of me when I had cruise control on. I just pay less attention when part of what I do is automated. Of course, what more reliable source of research could I provide than to point you to a website called "Injury Trial Lawyer" -- ha ha http://www.injurytriallawyer.com/blog/cruise-control-car-accidents-young-drivers.cfm Cruise Control Could Contribute to Car Accidents, Especially for Young ... to tune out and causes them to lose focus on regular driving tasks. Picasso
I was driving in LA today and saw Elon Musk with his family driving the Model X. There's only five on the road right now and I had to snap a pic: http://imgur.com/gallery/jsqbONR There's lot of debate on the aesthetics, but I know several affluent women who are dying to have the car. It will be interesting to see how demand shapes up but given how people were turning heads in Brentwood to see it drive by, I don't think they'll have any issues. I'm probably going to get it for my wife as well considering the safety factor versus her current SUV. Also glad to know he was taking Saturday off. He was looking pretty haggard in that Baron interview. I don't see how he can continue this pace especially going into the Model 3 ramp.... Uccmal
I have a question for Tesla owners. With no significant dealer network, where do you take the car for a recall, and or repairs. Have the developed a network of certified repair garages?

Obviously, the customer service is on point, but the very fact that you've had this done twice with a relatively new vehicle isn't supposed to be a cause for concern? The first time they came out to fix the issue in my driveway was a warranty repair. The glove box wouldn't open automatically when pushing the button (it's motor assisted) and they replaced that part and discovered a problem with the 12 volt battery and replaced that too. Actually, there were a lot of 12v batteries replaced in many Teslas of that vintage -- it was a common issue with a supplier I believe. Anyways, it was just the glove box. While there in my driveway, I mentioned that the car fishtailed a bit and he tightened down something -- I forgot the name of it, but it fixed the fishtailing. It was some sort of stabilizer bar that wasn't adjusted properly to the torque spec -- or whatever, I really forget the right lingo to describe it. The second issue that they came out with the flatbed for was just to install the underbody shield -- it was a recall issue. Remember the Teslas that caught on fire after the battery was punctured -- well they offered everyone this free armor plate and that's what they did. So when they brought out the flatbed, they left me with a loaner car to drive -- same configuration, exact same model. So really it was very convenient. ERICOPOLY
I blew a tire on the local highway this past Friday and called the Tesla Roadside Assistance number. They said I should just hang tight for the next 45 minutes and a replacement wheel/tire would be installed roadside. The tow-truck arrived and the man apologized that he didn't have the replacement with him, so he asked if I'd like to be taken to the local Tesla Service Center -- about five miles away. He put my car on his flat-bed and off we went. Another 30 minutes later they've got the new loaner wheel/tire on my car and I'm driving off again. They said they'd have my tire repaired/replaced by Tuesday. Yesterday they announced that my wheel/tire was ready, and that the cost would be $550, so I drove back to the Service Center for the swap today. Once the car was ready, the service manager apologized for all the delays and inconvenience and told me that Tesla would not be charging me for anything. So I have a new tire now, at no cost. Does the Model S come with a spare tire and jack for people who don't wish to wait on the side of the road for 45min? It would be more convenient sometimes to just get home or to work/etc and then call for the replacement.
Picasso
You can store one if you need a spare but that's a lot of weight and room for something that almost never happens. The wheels and tires can be quite expensive if you're on 21 inch wheels. Plus this is a heavy car with special jack points and procedures. You're not going to see some small spare donut wheel on a Tesla for that reason. It usually doesn't take long for them to swap in a new wheel and get you on your way. Considering that >50% of the drivers (myself included) would not be able to change the tire even on regular car (and like Picasso said it's harder on Tesla), what's the issue? You jack up the car, loosen a few lug nuts, take off the tire, put on the spare, tighten the lug nuts. Not too hard. It seems like the only thing different on the Tesla is that you need to know exactly where to put the jack. I'd prefer to change a tire myself and get to where I'm going, rather than lose an hour or more waiting for someone to do it for me. Sure they can do it quick (so can I), but they can't get there quick and I'd already be there. I've changed a number of tires on the side of the road when I was younger, but not in the last 15 years or so**, I wonder why that is? Have tires improved to an extent that it really is rare to get a flat? Or I'm thinking maybe I was just too cheap/poor when I was younger to replace my tires when I should have. **EDIT: Knock on wood.

Picasso
This is going to sound like a silly idea to some, but I really like the TSLA 1 1/4 convertibles trading near $80. They mature in March 2021 (couple years past the Model 3 ramp up) and yield over 5%. If Google or whoever takes out Tesla, then you get taken out at par. Conversion price is $360 for 2.78 shares of TSLA; if the Model 3 is a success we'll probably be well above that price. If it fails, well you're a bond holder of Tesla at $80 and probably 100x better than being a stockholder. The silly part of my idea is that Elon has shown that he pulls out his own checkbook to save his company if it's necessary; so this bond is also backed by SpaceX success which so far looks A+. I was going to wait for the stock to trade much lower to buy (if at all) but I'm probably going to start buying these convertibles. Thought I would mention it in case people didn't like the stock but found the convertible more interesting.
