Nice market share in the luxury segment:

https://electrek.co/2016/10/12/tesla-model-s-dominating-us-luxury-sedan-market-beating-mercedes-bmw-audi/

Tesla shocked the industry earlier this year when it confirmed having delivered 25,202 Model S sedans in the U.S. in 2015, which gave the company a 25% market share in the premium sedan market. For the first time, Tesla had surpassed market leaders like BMW and Mercedes. Furthermore, every single other large luxury sedan has seen its sales decrease during the same period.

Now the electric automaker is increasing its lead on the US luxury sedan market to such a point that the Model S is now twice as popular as the Mercedes S-Class or the BMW 7-Series. Tesla is literally selling more all-electric sedans in the US than Mercedes and BMW are selling S-Class and 7-Series combined.

Examples of what I was talking about above are already popping up:

It happened last Friday afternoon when I drove to Pocono for the weekend. I was on Autopilot driving eastbound on I-78 (a 2-lane divided highway with grass median) near Allentown, a normal traffic flow at 65-70 mph on a 55mph zone. All of a sudden, my MX braked very hard with some rapid beeping sounds, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee in front of me swing to the grass median. My MX stopped less than 2 car length away from a Toyota in front and the Cherokee definitely would have hit the Toyota if it didn't go to the median. All these went so fast and I didn't have time to process what exactly happened until all came to stops.

It turned out traffic came to a complete stop because of an accident on the opposite direction of I-78, and Cherokee probably didn't notice the slow down traffic until the last minute. However, new V8.0 AP in MX spotted the Toyota infront of the Cherokee using radar and applied the hard brake. I really can't see Toyota at all until Cherokee was out of way. If I was driving, it will definitely be too late to apply the brake and I would have rear-ended the Toyota.

I just updated my MX to V8.0 the Friday before, and it worked flawlessly for me this time. Not sure what can happen if I was still on V7.1. Thanks Elon !!!

I get that the cars are nice, and Musk is innovative and all, but I'm surprised(new here obviously) to see a thread on this on a value investing forum. Is there a rational bull case for this stock here?

Nah, we just have this thread for da carz and Elon's manly physique.  8)

I think you'll find that many of those who have bought shares did so thinking of this as a form of "corporate philanthropy". They think the good Elon will do in the world will far exceed the harm that may be done to his shareholders.

Nope, but Tesla and Elan Musk are fun and interesting topics to discuss.  On a related note there is also an Amazon.com thread on this board.

I predict a huge opportunity in towel sales (here's where I waffle) at some point in the future.

(wash, rinse & repeat...)

I've wasted a lot of time on Yahoo Finance over the years, preaching about ownership stakes in companies as opposed to speculating on short term price moves & what "could be" at various populist companies (I got regularly bleated off the stage by day traders...)

I'm truly thankful for Yahoo's mismanagement of the forums as it caused me to stop visiting & posting on that lunatic fringe.

I do; however, enjoy reading the discussions on COBF about Tesla & Amazon (neither of which I own) as it sharpens my ability to look at other businesses.

A lot of folks here enjoy swimming naked. 8)

I took off my pants and placed Model 3 reservation today.

Pictures on request.  8)

How easily transferrable is the reservation?

Not transferable. Limit 2 reservations per person. Cancellable at any time for full refund. I don't know if I will take delivery. Ask me when we get closer to the date.

Edit: here are paras from agreement:

3. Order Process

While this Reservation secures the approximate delivery priority within your region, it does not constitute the purchase or order of a vehicle.  When the start of production for your Reservation nears, we will ask you to configure your Model 3. Tesla will create an order for your vehicle and you will receive a Purchase Agreement indicating the purchase price of the vehicle, plus estimates of any applicable taxes, duties, transport and delivery charges, and any other applicable fees. If you proceed with the order, we will apply your Reservation Payment towards the order payment.  Until you enter into a Purchase Agreement, your Reservation may be cancelled at any time, in which case you will receive a full refund of your Reservation Payment.

4. Acknowledgements; Non-Transferable

You understand that we will not hold your Reservation Payment separately or in an escrow or trust fund or pay any interest on

your Reservation Payment.  Your Reservation is not transferable or assignable to another party without the prior written approval of Tesla.

They don't want people selling their reservations for a profit, hence no transfers.

You also don't get to know where you are in the queue. Those who previously purchased are placed at the front. I put my reservation in early, but I would not be surprised if I'll have to wait 3 years after they start delivering them.

You guys are awesome!

This is wayyy better than the Yahoo Finance forums...

I take it you haven't visited the "If American - which presidential candidate will you vote for? (Oct. Edition)" thread?

Wow that video is awesome. Didn't realize they were advancing on non-highway driving so much. Very few things make me feel like I'm living in the future, but that did it.

I like how the car parked itself. That would be great when you have to be somewhere and can't find a parking spot. Heck, the car could just keep driving around the block till you came back out.

I have but I make allowances as politics seem to lead to emotional responses even in individuals who normally display above average rational thought processes.

Where $$$ is involved; I'm very patient & have done a decent job of minimizing emotion (largely due to COBF Members, P. Fisher, B. Graham, WEB, M. Porter, P. Dorsey, J. Zweig & J. Bogle (I'm not in front of my bookshelf so I'm forgetting a few...)
