serendibz
Does anyone have a good setup for searching for special situations? eg liquidations, tenders, takeovers
ItsAValueTrap
Here's a blog that tracks spinoffs (they don't report everything though): http://www.stockspinoffs.com/
InelegantInvestor
Thanks for the mention. We do intend to report everything, but this is a hobby and time is short. Feel free to let us know what we've missed, and, if you like, submit articles.
Packer16
I appreciate your site as it is the only free site that tracks spin-offs. Packer
BG2008
I second Packer's comment. Your effort is much appreciated.
InelegantInvestor
Thanks for the appreciation. That's we we started it; there was no free site that did this, and it seemed simple enough. We've been pleasantly unsurprised by the amount of visitors and unpleasantly surprised by the amount of work. We welcome all feedback though. How can we make it more useful? LC
Perhaps a link to the relevant SEC filing? I am a huge fan of your site, btw :) also perhaps a "date announced" cell?
ItsAValueTrap
unpleasantly surprised by the amount of work You can say that again! I used to be interested in following spinoffs and it takes a lot of work to go through the SEC filings and everything.
PatientCheetah
Does anyone know any sites focused on post-reorg/bankruptcy stocks?
oddballstocks
Does anyone know any sites focused on post-reorg/bankruptcy stocks? Have you looked at Reorg Research? I believe they do exactly what you're talking about.
BG2008
Reorg Research cost an arm and a leg if you're not a fund with significant AUM. I could be wrong, but I believe it is $20-30/year for a subscription.
SharperDingaan
Very unscientific, but simply think of which sectors you would like to be in; & read the paper :) http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/international-business/us-business/gm-to-seek-court-protection-against-ignition-lawsuits/article18040206/ Somebody, somewhere, is reliably going to screw up ! matjone
You've probably already done this, but just in case you are a cave man like I was and haven't heard of them I would recommend setting up some google alerts.
yadayada
http://www.chapter11library.com/AboutUs.aspx for 15 pages of market caps between 10 to 100 million it costs 50$ for all of 2013. But now it says i need to email the admin. I guess you could get all year and every industry for 10-500 million emailed to you for probably several 100$. Guest wellmont
michael price said you could do very well just reading the "Lex" column in the FT.
bmichaud
to that point wellmont, isn't it Buffett that said all of his best ideas could be found just by reading the WSJ?
Guest wellmont
I think if you're curious, you read a bit, you talk to people, you're plugged into a network (this forum or twitter for example), good ideas find you. What did Buffett say about "sloth"? I think the point is be open, intuitive, and pay attention to ideas that resonate, that find their way To you.... valueinvestingideas
http://www.spinoffmonitor.com has every spinoff and other spec sits (restructuring, post-reorg, etc)
yadayada
are there any affordable paid services that are good? Where a full team of people is tracking these things. Most free sites are ok, but there is not exactly an abundance of ideas with effective filters etc. edit: http://www.10kwizard.com/ This looks interesting.
