Samsung is cheap but I put in the league with Apple in that is it is huge (over $200bn market cap).  For this to be a double it has to generate valuation gains of nearly $200bn which I think is very hard unless you are in a bubble.  I guess it can "unlock"  this value via spin-offs but given the nature of the situation of wanting to retain family control this is unlikely.  I do agree that the preferred is the way to go if you want to invest in this company.

shouldn't return of earnings be a catalyst if they are really cheap? If that does not happen, are they really cheap? If they are only paper earnings.

i think it will be a return of earnings. higher dividend or buyback. the new laws are good in my opinion. so the Family lose influence. this brings also the opportunity of a activist in place. Long term a good hold in my opinion.

Hi all,

I've bought some Samsung Pref GDR (SMSD) listed on the London Stock Exchange via my IB account, but am struggling with the rules regarding withholding tax. As an individual investor, does anyone know if I need to fill out a form and send to my broker or to Citi in order to ensure they don't take the full 22% withholding tax (should be 15% at source according to tax treaty the way I read it)?

Doesn't seem to be much information available on this, which is surprising given the size of the company and the volume traded.

Many thanks

//C

Anyone run into any issues purchasing this? I've heard US retail investors may have difficulties trading Korean securities.

SSNLF isn't available through IB or Fidelity, at least without an expensive broker assisted trade. Can anyone confirm other brokers that carry it? Is it DTC eligible? I haven't had much experience with unsponsored ADRs.

GDRs are trading in London Exchange (LSEIOB1) through IB: SMSD (preferred) and SMSN (common). Preferred is currently trading at around 3/4 of common.

Yes, but according to Samsung, JPMorgan and other sources, US retail investors aren't allowed to buy GDRs.

Samsung headed for its 7th quarter of profit decline in a row...

http://www.wsj.com/article_email/samsung-sees-seventh-straight-profit-decline-1436227146-lMyQjAxMTI1MjAwNzQwNzcwWj

The South Korean technology giant said that it expects to earn just 6.9 trillion Korean won ($6.1 billion) in operating profit for the three months ended June 30, a 4% decline from the same period a year earlier. It said revenue likely dropped to 48 trillion won, down 8.4% from the same period last year.
