  2. That's the optimistic scenario. I give it a 20% probability. Migrating structured data this simple is a piece of cake for Google.
  3. Seems like they are removing one of the major features of it, which doesn't really translate to developing the product. We'll see, but based on their track record, it doesn't augur well.
  4. The surprise is that a company with tens of thousands of engineers and infinite resources can't put one person part-time on just maintaining a page and maybe fixing a few bugs.. Maybe do a 6-month project to build HTML5 charts and then after that just maintain it..?
  5. ... Let Google know (feedback form at the bottom of Finance page) you'd like them to keep the portfolio feature. They're removing it soon. http://phandroid.com/2017/09/22/google-finance-update/ They're completely incompetent with all their second tier products. They used to own the RSS market but killed Google Reader a few years ago rather than just put a couple engineers on it and keep it in maintenance mode. Looks like Google Finance might suffer a similar fate over time..

  11. Apple has been pushing people to pre-order online more and more for the past few years. There's now basically no benefit (but still big hassle) to standing in line since people who ordered online will get their phones on opening day. Basically, who cares about lines ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ If there's something that has an effect this year, it'll be the iPhone X only coming later. The kind of early adopters who are ready to stand in line are the kind of people who will want a top of the line model... But delayed sales are not lost sales.

  14. ??? Model S is safe as long as the auto drive is turned off ;D If you use it properly, I bet it's safer than a human driver per mile driven. Humans are terrible drivers, we're just used to it, so there's no novelty/coverage anymore...
  15. Context also matters. It's not like you can ban "jew" or "jewish", or the local Klezmer orchestra might not be able to target potential customers, but how many phrases with those words in them along with other words that aren't by themselves over the line could be deemed offensive? ("hater" can also be used with inoffensive stuff, like I'm a "reality TV hater" or whatever) It's a tough problem. But that's why they pay them the big bucks, so I'm sure they'll figure it out over time.

  20. How did Facebook not foresee that this could happen? Even more, how did it not realize it was happening until outside observers reported it? One possible conclusion is that Sandberg and Zuckerberg's innumerable outside activities are pulling them away from Facebook's core business. I think they already banned all kinds of keywords and phrases but those slipped through. If it was that obvious, not only would they have thought about it before, but some journalists would also have found it before, y'know, anti-semitism was a daily news item in the US.
