  1. Yes, it does. It's a pretty giant cushion in the the actual decision to "retire". Would he/she/it/they have done it without a completely gender neutral significant other still bringing an income of unknown size to the household? We have no idea, but it certainly didn't hurt. No it doesn't, because this isn't a competition with set rules at which she's cheating. That's the way they're doing it, and reducing it to a "stay at home wife" is condescending because she's saved 2 million at 28, is financially independent, and is doing better than 99.9999% people of her cohort. I "retired" last year at 34. My wife is still working, she likes it. I earn money from investing, but I could very well index it all and go to the beach. Whatever, to each their own. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  3. Retired doesn't mean doing nothing and earning no money, in this context. It just means you don't *have* to work and are in control of your time, don't have a boss, etc. There really should be a better word for it because you always get the same comments, but I haven't seen that word yet (financially independent is another good term, but not quite there either). The most popular role model in the field is MrMoneyMustache.com (I recommend reading the sites archives chronologically... It takes a few posts for him to find his voice). The fact that her husband has a job doesn't change anything. If she was a man, I doubt we'd get the stay-at-home-husband label.
  4. Finally finished it. Here's my Amazon review:

  8. I use IB primarily. It's cheapest, and if you just want simplicity, you can use the web interface rather than the full app. I also have registered accounts with TDW and RBCDI and they're fine for what they are, but I prefer IB.
  9. I love you too, Cardboard.

  11. Same. I usually try not to get sucked into it, but once in a while something so crazy happens that I can't help it and fall into the vortex (presidential candidates bragging about sexual harassement and nazi rallies, that type of thing). The separate board makes it easier to ignore, so thanks Sanjeev!

  17. Personally, I don't believe that women and men are the same. I don't even believe that men are the same. But I do believe that everybody should be given the same opportunities and not discriminated against (actively or passively) because of whatever group they belong to. Treat people as individuals. In systems where there's existing bias, that can mean actively working to remove that bias. Doing nothing is a choice, and not always a neutral one (women didn't use to be able to vote or enter into contracts--was actively trying to change that wrong because it was "favoring women over men" at the time compared to how things used to be?).

  22. I'm more than halfway through the book now, and the chapter I just finished (called "The Bomb", because the effect of Shannon's theories had the impact of a bomb on the field) was just excellent. I already knew many of the basics of information theory, but this was a good primer on how the ideas were developed and their game-changing impact. I appreciate how the book spends a lot of time on Shannon's work and theories and doesn't focus that much on every single detail of his personal life and childhood and such as some biographies sometimes do (not necessarily a bad thing, especially when you want the definitive bio of someone, but some people are more interesting than others and sometimes you just want the highlights).
