  1. so what's next instead? VR? I think Apple is constantly looking at various thing and they'll keep working on cars and have probably been working on VR for a while. When they decided that they have something good enough to ship in either area is another question. Creating something isn't a linear process, and when they were making the iPhone they actually had two teams in the early stages, one taking the approach that ended up winning, and the other trying to build a phone based on the iPod platform (which didn't end up shipping).
  2. cwericb, I don't think it's useful to make this into "canada vs. the US", it's a distraction at best. In good part because the US isn't one thing, and nor is Canada, and because living in a country doesn't make the whole country your "team" anyway. (add nationalism to the list of things I don't care much about -- unless you emigrated somewhere, you were born there by accident and could've just as well been born in Afghanistan; and people are people, it shouldn't matter if someone is on one side or the other of some imaginary line on a map. A stranger in the US is just as much a stranger to me as a stranger in Canada, if I meet either, I'll judge them on who they are and what they do, not on their passport)
  3. This is why Munger warned against becoming an ideologue. Leads to crap thinking like this, trying to pigeonhole everyone into teams and then make sweeping generalizations about the other team to better dismiss them rather than look at the facts on a case by case basis. So-called right-wing individualists have some of the most collectivist thinking I've seen. BTW, I tend to agree with the left on social issues and the right on economic issues, which probably makes me some kind of libertarian, though I don't care for labels, I just look at the situation and do what I think is right. I don't agree with a lot of the politics in Canada, just like in the US. Never been part of a union, never even got any benefits from an employer since I was always a contractor. But I still have enough clear-thinking to realize that Donald Trump is human garbage and those who defend him are turning a blind eye to lots of things that they wouldn't tolerate in the teacher of their kids or in their coworkers. Reminds me of the recent Ben Carson thing about him "pausing" his values ( ) to support Trump. I wonder how often people pause their values like that and if they always realize it when they do...

  6. For all the same reasons that TDG has done well since 1993. I'm not trying to be glib. I mean that if you study the reasons why the company has done well, it explains why they can support a lot of debt and why they've been doing these returns of capital periodically.
  7. Yes this is definitely irresponsible. No excuses about it. But there's not gonna be any revolution much less a civil war. Once this is done and there's no one to fire them up every day with new vitriol these people will go back to their lives and talking shit about Madame President Clinton on talk radio. Oh course that's not gonna be the title they'll used, but oh well, such is life. I'm willing to bet that by now Hillary has rhino skin. I said he's basically calling for that, and that's dangerous. I'm not thinking of the overthrow of the US government or anything that dramatic, but he's definitely encouraging domestic terrorists and nutcases to feel justified in using violence to "right this wrong", and that can't be good.
  8. https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/787267564405653505 Now this is dangerous. The kind of stuff that can seriously screw up countries. But what do you do when you have an ego the size of a skyscraper and are so vain you can't ever admitt defeat? You say that you're really winning but they're stealing it from you. This kind of stuff pushed by a presidential candidate is basically calling his most ardent followers to do a civil war. I predict that if he keeps pushing that, some people somewhere - maybe police - will lose their lives and their blood will be on his hands. Update: the cult-like behaviour is also worrying: https://storify.com/bec2ab/jared-sexton-10-14-trump-rally
  9. May be Liberty, meanwhile you can also dig up some data on the Attorneys who are making less than janitors that an earlier poster referred. Scientists who are unemployed. In last 6 months I came across two scientists unemployed for over 3 years, one with a Ph.D. with a highly ranked university. Like this Redditt guy (this guy graduated in 2012): And ask yourself a simple question - whats happening with our economy? I already posted data that shows the wages today inflation adjusted are same as in 1979. How come with all the computers, drugs, TVs and many other technologies developed primarily from US, the US worker is doing so bad? The guy who has numerous bankruptcies, got to where he was in good part because of inherited wealth and family businesses, and who's net worth is mostly intangible 'brand' assets, who can't stop making stuff up and contradicting stuff he said on camera, and who obviously understands nothing about science will fix all the world's problems, eh? Ever looked up the track record of self proclaimed messiahs? He's a salesman. He's after power and fame. All his life's actions point in that direction.
  10. The only times I mentioned the kids were when they made statements that related to the election or their father. Sorry but when Eric tries to justify his father's sexual assaults, that's fair game.

  12. Did I ever mention Ivanka? Edit: Just noticed on her Wikipedia page that in 2007 Ivanka gave $1000 to the campaign of Hillary Clinton. Interesting.

  14. How does pointing out some of the horrible things that Trump and his kids have said and done make me left wing? I'm just removed enough from it all (maybe being Canadian helps?) to see that Hillary is just another politician, and that the other side will always claim that a politician is terrible. Obama was the socialist antichrist, Mitt Romney was this... McCain was that.. Kerry was, well, forget about it. And what about Bush and Al Gore? So many terrible things that they are... But Trump is on another level. He's pure human garbage in uber-salesman form, a pathological liar and sociopathic ur-narcissist type fermenting real long-lasting trouble by encouraging all types of conspiracy theories and real hatred from one of the biggest soapboxes of all time. It's mind-blowing how he's ready to say just anything to get power (remember, he used to think he might run for president as a democrat and had many positions in the past that are the opposite of what he has now; he constantly says he never said stuff that we have on tape, etc). That's what brought me out of my apathy about politics, because some things you can't easily ignore. Btw, as horrible as Trump is, there is a real divide between rural and city In America and everyone should pay more attention to it: http://www.cracked.com/blog/6-reasons-trumps-rise-that-no-one-talks-about/ But Trump is not a solution to that problem. He's spent all his life being the elitest of all coastal elites, focusing all his attention on only mingling with other elites and living the most opulent city lifestyle possible, never really using his power and wealth to help these people. You think he hangs out at the bar in rural areas with the coal miners? He's just using this problem and these people to try to put himself in power because he knows they're a large block of voters that can be motivated if you promise them certain things (go back to the good old days, bring back manufacturing, stop immigration, insult the media and cultural elites, etc). It's cynical manipulation, pure and simple.
  15. Are you saying you think Hillary has good judgement? I thought you believed otherwise.
  16. Oh, and who was it again who said Trump's kids were impressive and a credit to him? I think the Apple didn't fall too far from the tree: http://edition.cnn.com/2016/10/14/politics/donald-trump-jr-women-workplace/index.html

One more victim coming forward: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/woman-says-trump-reached-under-her-skirt-and-groped-her-in-early-1990s/2016/10/14/67e8ff5e-917d-11e6-a6a3-d50061aa9fae_story.html Considering the typical ratio of people who stay silent when these things happen ("Why do they stay silent?", ask Trump fans as they try to destroy the lives of the accusers), I wonder how many hundreds there actually are. He seems to have been operating like this for a few decades.. "Who you going to believe, women who claim they were groped, or a man who says he gropes women? It's a real "he & she both said" situation."

  20. I agree, I think it's very possible that they could offer an "edition". But I also think that this might not be as easy as it seems since the iPhone was designed from the ground up to use AL in its frame and structure (not just finish), and replacing that with something completely different like ceramic might be difficult. They did it with the Watch, but the iPhone has a very different X-Y-Z ratio and faces different stresses.

  24. Time will tell, but I think running might turn out to have been the worst thing he could do at the end of his career. It was high risk/reward to be clear, and he had a clear chance at winning despite the early doubt of everybody, but now I think he's probably going to be a bit like Mel Gibson and Bill Cosby in most circles, and that's gotta hurt to a man who loves nothing more than being in adored in public and to have his name associated with success. Especially since he spends most of his time with elites in places like New York, California and London, not in rural Alabama or or suburbian Florida or whatever. Probably won't be surrounded by fans..
