  1. http://news.nationalpost.com/2013/09/20/dairy-queen-employee-receives-international-attention-after-act-of-altruism-goes-viral/ Feel-good story of the day :)
  2. The SENS Research Foundation was spun off from the Methuselah Foundation. MF still focuses mostly on the M-Prize and raising awareness while SENS is more the hardcore science and engineering branch. I prefer the latter.
  3. Thanks! I caught the back half yesterday. This reminded me both of how much I enjoy listening to Warren and of how awkward Moynihan can sometimes be when speaking publicly (doesn't finish all his sentences, etc).
  4. More on iBeacons: http://gigaom.com/2013/09/10/with-ibeacon-apple-is-going-to-dump-on-nfc-and-embrace-the-internet-of-things/ iOS7 first to have multi-path TCP connections for more reliable and responsive mobile connectivity: http://qz.com/126642
  5. Over 22B market cap. I bet even Elon Musk thinks this is kind of crazy (he's alluded to overvaluation in interviews)... I wish they'd raise a few more billions right now.
  6. Just saw that too, came here to ask the same question.
  7. It's a probabilistic bet - nobody knows exactly how long that would take, but unlike events that are out of our control, we can make it happen faster by working harder at it and dedicating more resources to it, like the Manhattan project - but I think that this new engineering approach that SENS is taking is in a totally different league from what was done before (trying to understand metabolism and modifying it, trying to cure all diseases individually once you pass the threshold of pathology, etc.. all these approaches are much too hard) and improves the odds of it taking place sooner rather than later by a lot. You're used to doing your own research, so I'll just give you some pointers and you can make up your own mind: (this is old and much progress has been made since, but it gives a quick overview) http://citywire.kuluvalley.com/view/E586AD51-418F-C8CE-442B-828A9164D788?vtguid=70B21F9A-4BCA-C090-62F2-F77C0B007FE2 http://vimeo.com/30920931 (part 1) http://vimeo.com/30924129 (part 2) http://www.amazon.com/Ending-Aging-Rejuvenation-Breakthroughs-Lifetime/dp/0312367074/ http://www.liebertpub.com/overview/rejuvenation-research/127/ http://sens.org/research Update: This is a good place to look too: http://sens.org/sites/srf.org/files/reports/SENS%20Research%20Report%202013.pdf
  8. Thanks for posting. 100% of my charitable donations go to the SENS.org Foundation. I feel it's the most underfunded compared to the potential good it can do for humanity.
  9. Looks like it'll finish the day in positive territory. Diminishing returns to the scare tactics indeed.
  10. http://www.businessweek.com/printer/articles/153220-apple-chiefs-discuss-strategy-market-share-and-the-new-iphones Some nice color on management.
  11. I wouldn't say it's over yet, as they've shown great ability to manipulate the stock's price in the past, but there has to be a diminishing return to their tactics. What was shocking the first time in 2011 becomes less shocking the fifth time years later, and at some point you have to assume that everybody who could be scared was scared and the remaining holders are more resilient.
  12. I bought more in the past few days. I always keep Buffett's Walmart experience in mind with these things and don't try to milk a couple extra percents if I think it's already cheap enough. But of course, now that I've said this, it'll drop to 390, so you're welcome :D

  14. http://blogs.blackberry.com/2013/09/bbm-for-android-iphone/ BBM for iOS and Android.
  15. http://techland.time.com/2013/09/18/google-vs-death/print/ Don't know if it's good for shareholders, but for humanity, I'm glad they're thinking big along the lines of SENS.org.
  16. I had to retry a bunch of times to get my iPad to update, and my wife's iPhone is still - slowly - downloading iOS 7 (because I started her upgrade in the evening, when everybody came back from work at the same time in North-America and tried to update). I'm quite happy with it so far on my iPad. I'm not a typical user and had read a lot about it and seen videos, so it wasn't surprising. But it still feels more familiar than I expected, so I think most people will transition well. It's definitely a nice step forward; it's one of these things where you get used to it fairly quickly and it doesn't seem like a big deal until you try going back to the previous version on someone else's device and suddenly that looks like windows 95.
  17. Review embargo lifted: http://www.macrumors.com/2013/09/17/first-iphone-5s-reviews-touch-id-a-real-advance-two-tone-flash-produces-lovely-results/ http://www.macrumors.com/2013/09/17/first-iphone-5c-reviews-color-is-a-breath-of-fresh-air-will-sell-like-hot-cakes/
  18. What a character. Philip Seymour Hoffman could play him in a film. Thanks for sharing.
  19. Might be part of the reason, but I doubt it's a primary factor. Apple uses lots of open standards and contributes to open source projects when they think they are good. They don't seem to think NFC is a good enough experience for their users (they laughed at people bumping phones and such).
  20. Can you tell us if a thread exists about it on the investment board? ;)
  21. The enterprise is going to LOVE this stuff.
  22. More here: http://cannyvision.com/2013/09/12/the-most-forward-thinking-apple-yet.html For the record, I think it's likely Apple will eventually have a gaming console. It won't be just that, but probably some evolution of Apple TV that can also handle a game controller and with lots of GPU power. Mix that with a great TV interface and access to content over the top and maybe even through a cable box and that would be a big market.
