Paul Lountzis Interview Transcript & Report - Miguel Barbosa

Good presentation by Paul Lountzis at the Ben Graham Centre for Value Investing at IVBS (2019): h/t @bluegrasscap -
It seems pretty cheap if you trust that Breen will execute on the synergies and margin improvements, and that the new incentives for better ROIC and cutting low-return investments will work. Of course, large portions of the company are cyclical and there will be down (and up) quarters like this...

There's a 30 minute video of CSI's CFO speaking at the Scotia TMT conference yesterday available online. Very interesting talk. I think this link should work, but I don't know how long the video will stay up: https://onlinexperiences.com/scripts/Server.nxp?LASCmd=AI:4;F:QS!10100&ShowUUID=18D07014-3BF9-4203-9C4A-59DDD18A90C0&Referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.telus.com%2Fen%2Fabout%2Finvestor-relations%2Finvestor-events%2Fscotiabank-2019-tmt-conference The CFO basically straight-up confirmed that Mark Leonard's share sale plan is just a way to signal to the market.

I haven't watched the presentation yet, I plan to when I have time. I am however shocked by the lack of news/discussions about it here and just about everywhere else I follow. Usually I end up knowing what an Apple event was all about by the time I get around to watching it. This time not so much. Basically just a bunch of $10/months services for games, written content, and video content. Not that much to say.. It'll heavily depend on execution, and they clearly still hadn't ironed out all the details because a lot what left vague. They'll probably do okay just because of the huge built-in user base they can sell to, but I doubt they'll be much of a threat to Netflix just yet... Bet they wish they had bought them many years ago. The Apple Card is probably most interesting to me right now. I'm curious to find out the details of how they go on the rails... I've read in various places that they partnered with MasterCard, and maybe even Visa too... But it's not clear to me (if anyone has a good source on this, let me know).

That doesn't say what you said. It only says that under 120k household income you have access to the gov't taking a 5 or 10% equity stake in your house. Doesn't say anything about getting "118K (25%) of a 480K house, at 0% financing" like you wrote. Excuse me, .... you need to learn how to read. It was very clearly disclosed. 118K (25%) of a 480K house, at 0% financing - 70K (35K each x 2) of interest free financing from their RRSP - 48K (10% partiicipation loan) of interest free financing from CMHC Have a good day. SD Yeah, that doesn't make any more sense to me than it did before. Update: Ah, I see what you meant. Your writing is so abstruse that it missed what you were trying to say until now. I still don't think your assumptions make much sense for first time home buyers, and I wouldn't call using RSP money "0% financing" since there's possibly a bigger opportunity cost than whatever you'd pay for a mortgage if they are invested in equities that compound tax-free inside the vehicle, and the gov't equity stake isn't either, since on sale your forgo any price appreciation on that equity slice, which can potentially also turn out to have had a higher cost than a regular mortgage (who knows, depends on the period, location, etc), but whatever.

From the little that I know of it, ESPN seems like one of the best purchases ever. It was thrown in as an after-thought in previous deals with Capital Cities/ABC, and grew into one of the biggest media franchises in the world. It's facing headwinds now because it made a lot from being bundled, but it's probably still a thousand-bagger and can still be a cash cow for a while longer even if it declines.

NP, but if you're having trouble sleeping because of your CHTR position, maybe you own too much! btw, I think they'll probably keep tweaking and improving the cells and will probably get better distances over time... But on the other hand, chances are that they cherry picked the best sites to begin the roll out, so as they go down the list, real-world performance might get even worse in certain cases, not better. Just speculation on my part, though.

A megacap growing revenues at 2-3x GDP isn't bad. EPS seems to have been growing at mid-double-digits during the period, and they're well positioned for future growth with a large moat, great ROE and ROIC. They're well positioned for long-term future growth. It's more a case of high terminal value and predictability. Just a different risk-benefit profile than some of the other things you're looking at, probably.
