  1. It's why I use Ajay's team at UBS. They will work the trade for us at their trading desk, and then we are charged solely on a per share basis. Otherwise, you will have to look for blocks that are offered and try to buy them. Cheers! "work the trade" Care to explain a bit of the strategy behind that? I believe it just means to attempt different strategies to get the best execution for large blocks of shares, usually illiquid ones. "pinging" for limit orders, doing stuff with VWAP (I'm no trader so I don't know the intricate details...)
  2. that's a good point, thanks for the insight.
  3. How do you respond to the argument that the same cannibalization we're seeing now took place as the iphone took sales from ipods? And that competitors won't go the way of the Microsoft Zune (or whatever their competing "iPod" product was")?
  4. An excellent example of how people have difficulty separating price from value. I like Dewars. If Dewars goes up in price by 50 cents, guess what? I'm still buying Dewars. A lot of people feel that way about their alcoholic drink of choice. If an iPhone goes up by 50 cents, I'm still buying it too (if that makes anyone feel better). Yes but you aren't purchasing more Dewars, or iPhones. valueInv's example is describing the irrationality of consumers in general, not the specific flavour of irrational behaviour which Apple consumers may or may not suffer from. PS: For the record, I think Apple's products are beyond commodities. They offer the best user experience, bar none. Smartphones are devices used to access our private lives: pictures of ourselves/family/friends, our personal selection of music, our private phone conversations, etc. This isn't coal being used to fuel a plant.
  5. An excellent example of how people have difficulty separating price from value.
  6. Regarding CCH, is it really that cheap? A cursory glance shows a P/E of 38...other bottler/distributors are trading at lower multiples...COKE @ 27x and KOF @ 33x Also, linked to the SSW thread in the investment ideas section, can anyone speak to Greek shippers?
  7. I looked at Diana shipping before...the numbers are good but there are so many cheap shipping companies out there that I want to do a more comparative analysis. There are two Greek shipping companies (Danaos Corp, Navios Maritime) that I am looking at side-by-side. They're just so cheap I feel they deserve some analysis.
  8. I'm quoting myself because I still think the above. If you're going to forecast weekly / monthly stock price movements, yikes. Buffett said it: he can't predict how the operating businesses he OWNS will do in a month, how anyone thinks they can do so for the stock market is beyond me.
  9. In retrospect, buying AAPL a year or two ago sub-400 would have been a smart move.
  10. Whenever I read or hear something along this line, I just constantly repeat the wise words of Charlie Munger, that if you can't stomach 50% declines in the price of your stock, you aren't suited for common stock investments and will deserve the mediocre results you achieve. Not directed at you or anyone in particular, but it's a mental tool I use to realize that no matter how badly one was burned in the past, each situation can be approached differently.
  11. It seems like a good strategy to use when there are temporary overvaluations, but you expect there to be a continued undervaluation in the future.
  12. i still think it's brilliant business to own the company that creates diabetes (KO) and the company that treats it (DVA)
  13. Can you direct to any sources on these types of option strategies? I.e. using options to maneuver into/out of a position for an indirect benefit. I.e. avoiding taxable events, selling puts to enter a position, selling calls to exit a position, etc.
  14. Pretty sure if you get into either you'll be OK as far as networking etc goes. Columbia will give you a more value-focused education I would assume. But both are obviously at the top of everyone's list.
  15. Accountable for what? Lowering my cost basis, or exercising their freedom of speech? The analysis was reasonable and legal. If shareholders examine the facts and side with Gotham Capital, that is their right!
  16. The question was directed at Sanjeev but I personally purchase a small tracking position and go from there. FYI I purchased a small tracking position in SD today as well. It's just so damn cheap...we'll have to see what the market does with it the next few days/weeks.
  17. Were they liquid at those prices? Probably theta or perhaps someone making a large purchase as a hedge?
  18. Down quite a bit recently. I am thinking of initiating a small stake.
  19. I don't like traditional radio and OTA TV stocks because I'm not sure where the future is headed. Couple of things: Digital advertising isn;t the be-all-and-end-all. Advertising doesn't work in a vacuum. It's not TV vs. Radio vs. Billboards vs. Digital. They all combine to drive sales or brand awareness. Advertisers know this. Attribution is the forefront of the advertising industry right now. So when you say traditional radio and TV station stocks are "hated by the market" and "you don't know where their future is headed"....isn't that exactly the type of investment opportunity you want? One that the market is heavily discounting and that most people don't understand? Just food for thought.
  20. Right, but we can't make that assumption. The nature of long-tail loss is that catastrophic events happen of greater magnitude and frequency than we "assume".
  21. UG has come across my eyes a few times. They have good margins, low debt, etc. Solid fundamentals. Every time I looked into it, it seemed fairy priced to me. Couldn't get it for a P/E lower than 20x.
  22. i agree. i cant speak to the accuracy of the financials, especially across different countries with different reporting standards. therefore i will keep my mouth shut ;D
